  • Recent show with Carlotta Conte

Just listened to this most recent show and so appreciated the conversation, with the voiced observation about an “older” tree care industry experiencing change and challenges in this young century. The tagline I’ve been using is that “the tree care industry is on the frontline of the climate catastrophe.” Arborists are only now beginning to connect the dots as to their professional responsibilities in being part of the solution.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S7E6: "The Child Who Never Goes Outside Won't Fight to Save It." — On Children, Nature & the Long Game with Laís Fleury of the Alana Foundation
Q: Before we get into the documentary, why is this nature-based education so important in this very moment?
Nature-based education is essential because children today live highly confined, indoor, and screen-focused lives; ensuring regular contact with nature supports their physical, cognitive, and emotional development and helps address current widespread challenges like obesity, myopia, and mental health issues.
S6E3: The Tree Is the New Sewer System with Erwin van Herwijnen of New Urban Standard
Q: What does it take to keep existing greenery in urban redevelopment?
Preserve mature trees by designing growing places that protect their roots and integrate water management from the start, so redevelopment enhances rather than destroys existing urban forests.
S6E3: The Tree Is the New Sewer System with Erwin van Herwijnen of New Urban Standard
Q: What are some common misconceptions about trees in cities?
People often see leaves falling and assume trees are a nuisance or that shade is the only value, while failing to recognize how trees cool cities, reduce heat, and contribute to long-term urban resilience when growing conditions are properly designed.
S6E3: The Tree Is the New Sewer System with Erwin van Herwijnen of New Urban Standard
Q: What lessons do you give to the next generation of tree professionals?
Focus on persuading civil engineers with solid data and enforce that projects satisfy both the natural needs of trees and the technical constraints of urban infrastructure, ensuring water is managed and the pavement remains stable.
S6E3: The Tree Is the New Sewer System with Erwin van Herwijnen of New Urban Standard
Q: What does the Internet of Nature mean to you?
It means using a combination of soil health, engineered growing places, sensors, and practical tools to create a green, functional urban ecosystem, where technology supports trees and water management in the city.
