  • Series 5/ Episodes 5 & 6

I enjoyed these episodes with historian Dominic Sandbrook quite a lot. The making of a tax base is a fascinating topic, and more philosophical than one would expect. The way you all wove in the social history grounded tax in the lives of relatable people - just great!

  • Excellent podcast about tax

This podcast is really good. They are explaining complex things in ways you can understand. If you are a student or work in tax or just want a proper explanation of something you’ve come across, this is it. They laugh and joke but you know they know what they’re talking about.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 94 - 5th Anniversary special with Kwasi Kwarteng
Q: What was your experience like taking the role of Chancellor, and how did that transition feel on day one?
Kwasi describes it as exciting but framed by continuity from his previous role as business secretary; the transition was a promotion with ongoing responsibilities and existing relationships in the Treasury, rather than a complete pivot.
Episode 90: The Office of Tax Simplification, Gone But Not Forgotten - with Bill Dodwell
Q: Is it something that I've always wondered about?
We do tend to get this layering of legislation that complicates the tax system, and the government policies can add to that complexity.
Episode 90: The Office of Tax Simplification, Gone But Not Forgotten - with Bill Dodwell
Q: Can you think of an alternative way to do it?
I think you're absolutely right. Yes, yes. Sometimes you need that complexity to deliver fairness, which is another perfectly sensible objective of a regressive tax system.
Episode 77 - Rachel Reeves and the £22bn Blackhole - Non doms and tax rises - What on earth is happening in the UK?
Q: From your perspective, how much was this a decision that was rooted not in fiscal policy, but in electoral politics?
I would say it was 90% policy and 10% fiscal.
