  • The sound is atrocious

Genuinely impossible to listen to because the sound is so horrendous. This podcast allegedly has a producer, you wouldn’t know it. The difference in volume between the host and the interviewee is so big that you either can’t hear the guest or the host blasts in your ear. Grim.

  • very fair minded

Thorough and engaging, calm and reasonable - recently made mincemeat of a UCD geographer who didn’t seem at all award of the massive inequalities inflicted tax wise in urgeant Ireland. Calls out the rural spooferati who are subsidised to the oxters.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Here’s How 184 – Little Empires
Q: If you were of the opinion that it was appropriate to change the speed limit on a road, would you have the power to do that?
Individual roads could be adjusted, but a broad change to speed limits would require national alignment; the mayor can influence but cannot unilaterally implement nationwide changes.
Here’s How 184 – Little Empires
Q: Do you have any powers that did not previously exist within any other elected local authorities?
Yes, including the interconnection with national government, the ability to chair ministers and agencies, and to request early consultations for issues affecting Limerick, although other powers are still constrained by national frameworks.
Here’s How 184 – Little Empires
Q: Specifically on that, then, your term lasts until 2029. You do have a right to seek re-election. But in 2029, how will Limerick be better than it would have been if it had continued under an old style local authority?
The guest argues that the new direct mandate creates clearer choices for five-year terms, with better accountability and a stronger focus on delivering housing, infrastructure, and strategic planning, while acknowledging the ongoing limits of national control and the need for reform to unlock faster local delivery.
Here’s How 177 – Threats to Democracy
Q: If Sinn Féin had managed their vote a bit better in Donegal, how could they have secured more seats?
They could divide the constituency vote among candidates effectively by using specific messaging and understanding their stronghold areas.
Here’s How 177 – Threats to Democracy
Q: Are you telling me that it's not an accident that smaller countries are more democratic than larger ones?
There may be something beyond chance because the correlation is statistically significant.
