The story of Valois Burgundy is one of the most exciting of the Late Middle Ages. The four Valois Dukes of Burgundy used political intrigue, calculated splendor, economic power, and good old-fashioned violence to forge a state out of the many Duchies and Counties between France and the Holy Roman Empire. During Burgundy's height its Dukes were seen by many as the equals of Kings and Emperors and t... more

Tournaments were more than an excuse for knights to whack each other with sticks, they were elaborate court events filled with splendor, ritual, and the careful exercise of violence. Perhaps nobody in Burgundy exemplified the Tournament as much as Ja... more

I consider myself to have a good general knowledge of European history, but this podcast allowed me, in the most engaging and entertaining way, to discover a much-overlooked aspect of late medieval history (The Burgundian State) that has impacted modern history to this day (Hundred Years' War, Habsburg rise, birth of Switzerland, Eighty Years' War, Wars of Louis XIV, etc.) and which could easily have resulted in another great country between France and Germany.
I highly recommend it; the resea... more
Not bad at all for an often overlooked bit of history
Excellent podcast; very thorough, well-researched, professional and well-sourced. My only request is to please check some pronunciations of place names!
Very well researched and a perfect companion to someone beginning their masters!
Does a good job of balancing historical facts and context with moving through the narrative at a reasonable pace. Some history podcasts descend into a list of names, places and dates - but without historical context or a strong narrative. Others provide an overall narrative that seems to gloss over the uncertainties of the sources and moves too fast to be credible. This podcast takes on the difficult challenge of providing both a history of the region of Valois Burgundy and enough context on the... more

This historical series centers on the late medieval Burgundian state and its towering, sometimes ostentatious, court. Across recent episodes the focus weaves together political power plays, grand cultural patronage, military conflicts, and the social rituals of a dynastic empire in flux. Listeners can expect deep dives into topics like medieval tournaments, the Ghent Revolt, royal bastards and mistresses at court, and legendary Burgundian narratives from Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles, all framed to illuminate how regional polities fused into a Burgundian powerhouse. A standout trait is the meticulous, narrative-driven approach to complex histories, with dense sourcing and a preference for context that helps connect medieval politics to broader E... more
