It is a regular, chronological podcast, starting from the end of Roman Britain. There are as many of the great events I can squeeze in, of course, but I also try to keep an eye on how people lived, their language, what was important to them, the forces that shaped their lives a... more

  • Detailed history delivered with great wit.

OK, this podcast can move a little slow at times but is delivered with such wry wit that you can’t help but hang on. I also learned lots of Britishisms such as “oikes” and “popped his clogs” that too makes it worth the trip.

  • Absolutely superb series tracing the history of England. Beautifully explained, analysed and interpreted, often with a touch of humour and pineapples.

  • Comprehensive and entertaining

Best podcast with the most inane and grating ads I have ever heard. They make it hard to listen to too many podcasts in a row.

French and English Revolutions Q&A Part II
Q: Why did the French Revolution encounter such difficult headwinds?
Military crises, hunger crises, and a culture of paranoia and suspicion contributed to the violence and instability of the French Revolution.
French and English Revolutions Q&A Part II
Q: How much influence do you think the British Revolution was on the French?
The overall influence of the English Revolution on the French is probably less than is commonly assumed and much of it is indirect.
French and English Revolutions Q&A Part I
Q: Did Mary Antoinette really say, let them eat cake?
There is no evidence that Marie Antoinette said this phrase; it is attributed to an unnamed French princess and became associated with her long after her death.
French and English Revolutions Q&A Part I
Q: What if both monarchs had been more ruthless?
For Louis XVI, ruthlessness is not his biggest problem; his indecisiveness is more detrimental. For Charles I, it could have made a difference if he had been more ruthless in quelling dissent.
French and English Revolutions Q&A Part I
Q: When you think of Charles I, what are his defining characteristics?
Charles I is viewed as a tyrant with personal characteristics that make him both attractive and flawed; he is cultured, a good family man, but also arrogant and inflexible.
