This my re-telling of the story of England. I aim to be honest, and rigorous - but always loving of my country's history. It is a regular, chronological podcast, starting from the end of Roman Britain. There are as many of the great events I can squeeze in, of course, but I also try to keep an eye on how people lived, their language, what was important to them, the forces that shaped their lives a... more

Best history podcast out there
Extremely detailed history podcasts about DAR with heavy doses of humour. Usually it’s just David - occasionally there’s a guest. For me that’s important because if it’s >1 speaker sometimes the banter is too much for me. David took the summer off & I actually miss his podcast! That’s how you know it’s a great podcast! Hurry back David!
Best. Podcast. Ever.
Think Monty Python meets a meticulous history professor. David is a natural storyteller, and his love for the subject shines through in every word, delivered with sharp wit and delightful English-isms (everyone loves an ’ism’—see Episode 427!). Each episode feels like catching up with a friend at the pub: a wonderfully meandering chat about all sorts of things, always lively, always interesting. Thanks to David for making me laugh out loud (more than once!) on the bus to wor... more
I’ve listened to a lot of history podcasts. More than is healthy. This is the right one. The right amount of information. His English-ness has the correct amount of self deprecation and humor. He offers differing perspectives on controversial topics (Princes in the tower etc). Most importantly, he really go to the effort of portraying what it must have been like for the people who lived it. Give this man a banana, he’s a winner.
Phenomenal performance. Have enjoyed everything I’ve listened to at this point. Easy to follow with plenty of website support for things like maps and further reading.
