Love this podcast! I have learned so much about my own native language through this show. 10/10, highly recommended!
I absolutely love this podcast and along with the History of England podcast they’re honestly the only two that I listen to on a regular basis. Everyone who knows me knows that if we’re in my car, we are either going to be listening to the history of English or the history of England.
I love the way that Kevin gives us not only the history of the words and the etymology and what was going on on a global scale to influence the language but also the pronunciation and the ships and pronunciation a... more
I love this podcast. In fact it's one of my most favourite podcasts ever.
I’ve been fascinated by words, etymology and linguistics since I was at school and actually studied Ancient Greek.
The podcast doesn't just cover the evolution of the English language but explains how Indo-European has evolved across Europe and how we are all connected. I love to listen to this podcast, it's detailed and yet very well explained for those who haven't studied linguistics. I worked in a linguistics department for Romance languages for six years and am now a teacher, once lived in Sweden and studied Scandinavian languages. For me it's like going back to the old times when my days were about researching morphemes and the origin of language changes. I have always loved history. So fun to listen to! 😊
Kevin continues to provide compelling episodes year after year. Over on Kevin’s Patreon he explores even more creative and wide-ranging topics—16th century crime slang, the Mid Atlantic movie star accent, made-up words in modern pop songs, for example.
