  • Insightful interviews for those seeking more than the canned answers

Rick Bennett does an amazing job asking insightful questions of people from many different educational and spiritual backgrounds. If you're looking for additional resources on your spiritual path at a university level you will find him asking hard questions with honesty and integrity of scholars of the LDS faith, others who have roots in the LDS faith, some Christian theologians not of our faith, and from time to time some leaders of the church. • Tired of the Bragging

Overall I like the interviews and respectful way the host interacts with his guests, but I very much dislike his statement at the beginning, “the best source for Mormon history, science, and theology.” That statement sounds childish, stupid, arrogant, and “propagandish”, just like car dealers who want me to believe that “now is the absolute best time ever to come by a car”. Rick, that statement is everything the rest of the podcast is not—stop saying that!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why Every LDS Church Has Basketball Court (Matthew Bowman 1 of 4)
Q: Tell us about James Naismith and why basketball was designed as a Christian sport.
Naismith was a minister-in-training who designed basketball at a YMCA with the explicit aim of producing Christian gentlemen and promoting cooperation and healthy character, positioning the sport as a humane alternative to more violent games like football.
Inside LDS Temple Ceremonies (Jonathan Stapley 2 of 4)
Q: How did the initiatory and the endowment differ in early Mormon practice, and how did those distinctions evolve?
The initiatory began as an earlier, more outline-based, oral tradition that gradually became formalized into a structured endowment in Nauvoo, with evolving elements such as clothing, covenants, and the sequence of rites. Over time, leaders like Brigham Young instituted changes, and the ceremonies shifted from a small, male-priesthood-centered practice in Kirtland to a broader, more inclusive Navu endowment.
Amazing Complex History of Women & Temple Sealings (Jonathan Stapley 3 of 4)
Q: Can you talk about the disparity in how the ceiling texts for women and men evolved from 1842 to 1852?
Stapley explains that the 1842 text accompanying Joseph Smith's era was more egalitarian, whereas the Nauvoo 1852 text, aligned with the Quorum of the Twelve, emphasized different gender dynamics, illustrating a shift in how women's roles within temple rites were framed.
Why Janice Allred StaysWhy I Stay: Three Decades in the Pews as an Excommunicated Member
Q: How has excommunication affected your family life?
Her oldest daughter was married in the temple with a baby on the way when the excommunication occurred, so she chose to keep attending so her children wouldn't have to pick sides; some children remained active while others left. She emphasizes maintaining open conversation and love within the family while navigating divergent beliefs.
Polygamy Conference Controversies & Recap 2026
Q: Is it true that Mormons, when told about sexual abuse against children by church leaders, call lawyers and not police?
The speaker notes that this topic is not the focus of the session and does not provide a direct answer, instead steering back to the discussion of the 1886 Revelation and polygamy history.
