  • It’s “sedentary,” not “sedimentary”

I’m not taking advice from a guy that doesn’t know what words mean. He was talking about lack of physical activity but used the word for a type of rock. Good luck to you, but wowza.

Good retirement planning Info. Nice short episodes. I appreciate all the advice. The intro music and outro disclaimers are very annoying to listen to. The legal disclaimers voice is worse than listening to nails on a chalkboard. It has caused me to unsubscribe.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

FERS Paperwork Lost or Delayed? Steps to Get Back on Track
Q: Is your FERS retirement paperwork lost or delays? What steps do you need to do to get it back on track?
The host recommends locating your CSA number, logging into the OPM portal to open a case, and communicating with your assigned case manager, while acknowledging that the portal can be slow and follow-up may be necessary.
What Happens to Your Social Security If You Die Before Claiming?
Q: I will have the higher benefit and plan on not collecting Social Security until at least my FRA, which for him is 67. How is my wife's survivor benefit affected if I die before I start receiving Social Security?
The survivor rule is that your spouse will receive the higher of your benefit or their own, so delaying to maximize your own benefit often increases what your spouse can receive after your death; there isn't a lump-sum payment, and timing matters for optimizing the survivor payout.
#147 Does market timing always work?
Q: What trigger would tell you the market has bottomed out and it's time to buy again?
There isn't a reliable trigger; the bottom is unknowable in real time and trying to time it often leads to missed gains. The recommended approach is to maintain a plan and use disciplined strategies like dollar-cost averaging rather than trying to time the exact bottom.
#143 Tax-Saving Strategies for the Year-End: What You Need to Do Now
Q: What are the key financial strategies people should consider as they approach retirement?
They should manage cash flow, increase retirement savings, plan for taxes, and review benefits, especially concerning health savings accounts and beneficiaries.
Do trusts pay higher taxes on inherited TSPs and IRAs than individual beneficiaries?
Q: Would it be better to say my kids are primary beneficiaries instead of the trust?
Yes, because trusts are taxed at higher rates which can lead to significant tax liabilities.
