Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

James Mendez on Playing With Chemistry
Q: What would you tell a professor who has never designed a game to do first, and what common mistake would you warn them to avoid?
Mendez recommends trying existing chemistry games before designing a new one, both to learn from their approaches and to avoid reinventing the wheel. He also advises focusing the game on a specific learning goal rather than trying to include too much.
James Mendez on Playing With Chemistry
Q: What convinced you that play could accomplish something in chemistry that traditional instruction alone could not?
Classroom boredom prompted Mendez to explore more engaging teaching methods. 3D printing let him create hands-on models, and he began designing games when he realized chemistry-specific games he wanted to use were hard to find.
Suzanne Lyons on Cooperative Games
Q: How can a cooperative game prevent one confident player from controlling the group while quieter participants become passive or overlooked?
Lyons gives three approaches: use mechanics that distribute information, resources, or roles; have teachers explicitly frame participation as a shared goal; and select open-access games that do not depend on one person finding the solution.
Suzanne Lyons on Cooperative Games
Q: What did you learn about cooperative games at the conference, and why did you devote so much of your career to studying and sharing them?
Lyons discovered that games could be played without competition and saw their potential for teaching science and collective action. She later took over Animal Town, learned from early practitioners, and became interested in cooperative games' social-emotional benefits and use in education.
Sebastian Bae on Littoral Commander
Q: What lessons would you share with educators designing military or serious games to balance accuracy, accessibility, engagement, and meaningful learning?
Two major lessons: have a clear vision of learning goals and audience, and build behind-the-scenes infrastructure for post-game discussion and reflection to maximize learning from the experience.
