  • Last one with Mr Ricks is too political

Have listened faithfully to every podcast. Now that you had an obvious Anti trump person on could you put a Trump supporter on like Mark Levin who has written about our founders for years not just after he was shocked by an election. Totally turned off by last episode. If it continues to get political I will no longer listen.

  • Great Interviews

I have listened to many interesting interviews with people who really know their stuff. Sometimes the guest sound quality suffers from a poor phone line, but great content.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

E325: Ray Raphael: Declarations Before THE Declaration of Independence
Q: Were there regional differences in these early declarations, or were they largely similar in aims and rhetoric?
There were stylistic differences driven by local contexts, but the underlying aim and emotional drive were largely consistent across regions, showing a shared momentum toward self-rule.
E325: Ray Raphael: Declarations Before THE Declaration of Independence
Q: Ray, what made you want to write this particular article when you did?
I wanted to broaden the narrative beyond the famous names and show how a wider array of declarations—from towns and counties—pushed toward independence, inspired by Pauline Mayer's work and grounded in bottom-up political thinking.
E324: Brooke Barbier: Cocked and Boozy: An Intoxicating History of the American Revolution
Q: What roles did alcohol play in the revolution beyond being a drink?
Alcohol served as currency, fuel for social interaction, and a focal point in political debates about taxation and duty, with different beverages aligning with Federalist or Anti-Federalist sentiments at various moments.
E324: Brooke Barbier: Cocked and Boozy: An Intoxicating History of the American Revolution
Q: Was wine an upper-class drink, and would the working man enjoy a glass of wine in the 18th century?
Wine tended to be elite, with Madeira and other high-end imported wines seen in decanters, while the average person drank more accessible options like beer or cider; the social signaling around wine was significant but not universal.
E324: Brooke Barbier: Cocked and Boozy: An Intoxicating History of the American Revolution
Q: So Brooke, your new book focuses on the really important role of alcohol in the American Revolution. Tell us about how you came to that subject.
The tour company I started in 2013 led me to research taverns and their role in Boston, which then expanded to a colony-wide, even continental, perspective on alcohol's social and economic impact during the Revolution.
