  • Fantastic

I started listening to Jack on a road trip to NY with some random desire to listen to the history of New Jersey. Found his witty banter and storytelling enchanting. His ability to educate and entertain intertwine in a truly talented manner. Thank you for this wonderful endeavor, which is obviously a labor of love.

  • Educational Enlightening Engaging

Mr. Henneman’s series on American History is a joy to listen to. My understanding of our early history has been immensely broadened and I still haven’t finished the first 100 episodes. I recently took a road trip through eastern states from Florida to Washington, DC with the goal of visiting sites related to the American Revolutionary War and listened to many of these podcasts while driving. I also took in several state museums. What I learned here helped me put so much more of our history in co... more

  • Incredibly good podcast

Jack Henneman works hard and delivers a terrific podcast. He clearly does his research and he delivers an absolutely engaging, informative and enjoyable episode one after another. I am nearly 40 episodes into a growing (over 200!) oeuvre and find that the podcast delivers what has been promised: fun and interesting discussions of history without presentism, weaponization for modern politics, or undue moralizing.

I thoroughly enjoy this podcast, I learn something (usually a lot) every episode, a... more

  • Great early American history show!

This one of the best history podcasts on the Internet. It’s in depth and scholarly, but Henneman masterfully organizes events with all their complexity into compelling multi-episode narratives. And he has a wonderfully dry sense of humor.

It covers “the history of the people who have inhabited the lands compose the United States of America.” That means allthe way from what little we know about these lands from pre-Colombian days, through the Age of Exploration in great detail, and on into ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#183 Interview with Matthew J. Tuininga
Q: Could you tell us the sort of principle argument in Wars of the Lord laid out for our readers?
Tuininga explains that the book does not foreground an explicit argument but seeks to portray the intertwined narratives of Puritan religious ideology and their colonial ambitions, correcting a historiographical divide.
#147 Interview with James Horn
Q: How did a fellow with a strange accent like yours end up in charge of the Jamestown Foundation?
I moved to the United States about 26 years ago to continue my work over here and became very interested in the early migration to the Chesapeake Bay, including Maryland, actually, Virginia and Maryland.
