  • Interviewer who states opinions rather than asks questions

To be fair I only listened to the Helen gardener episode. Did not let her finish a sentence constantly interrupted and stated his opinions framed as questions.

  • Pete Buttigieg

I’m enjoying Nick’s interview style. At first I was annoyed he didn’t press Pete harder on spending cuts and entitlements. But then I realized but letting him talk about minute changes that will do nothing, it’s even more obvious that he has no ideas how to deal with the deficit.

Keep up the good work Nick. Like how you let them express themselves and ask simple guard rail questions to help tease out the lack of serious policies.

  • Disappointingly Weak

Authoritarian autocracy on the rise with in-your-face corruption and unconstitutionality on proud display, and the voice of the “don’t tread on me” ethos gives us… stadium funding? Seems to me Reason was more exercised about the Covid lockdowns than they are about the armed occupation of American cities. Looks to me like Libertarianism needs to rediscover its anti-authoritarian roots.

  • Reason - Interrupted

Nick is grating on both this podcast and the Reason Roundtable for his constant interruptions and over-talk. The Ken Burns interview was painful to listen to, up to the point Ken even told Nick to please let him answer the question.

  • Episode with Katie

Most of the time I enjoy Nick’s interviews. Some subjects are more interesting than others so I don’t always finish them. But Nick is a great interviewer. I also subscribe to Blocked and Reported and love Katie, so I have heard several discussions about her book. Sorry Katie, I haven’t bought it yet. When I first saw that was Nick’s interview today I almost skipped it. I listened on my slow traffic drive home and it was really good and kept my interest. Nick asks great questions and brought out... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why Populism Leads to Decline
Q: What lessons can the U.S. learn from globalization and trade history?
Free trade and openness generally create long-run gains, but you must prevent protectionist coalitions from capturing policy and ensure that benefits diffuse broadly rather than concentrating in small, loud groups.
Why Populism Leads to Decline
Q: Is populism a inevitable phase at the end of a golden age, or can societies guard against it?
Populism tends to flare up when people feel economic or cultural threat; societies guard against it by keeping institutions open, maintaining rule of law, and ensuring that growth and opportunity can be shared, not concentrated.
Why Populism Leads to Decline
Q: What do you think makes a civilization rebound after a period of decline or stagnation?
A culture needs to maintain openness to new ideas, encourage creative destruction, and actively absorb talent and technology from abroad while adapting its institutions to handle larger, more diverse populations.
The Global War on Free Speech
Q: What is the free speech recession?
The guests describe a decades-long trend where democracies, once proud of expansive speech and internet-enabled openness, are rolling back freedoms due to regulatory pressures, national security concerns, and the need to protect children, while authoritarian regimes intensify censorship and surveillance, creating a global shift in how speech is managed.
Justice Neil Gorsuch: 'Aspirations for Power Need To Be Checked'
Q: How do you stay true to the text of the Declaration without just asserting rights that aren't there?
By anchoring understanding in the text as understood at the time it was enacted, ensuring the judiciary applies law without projecting personal wishes, and recognizing that amendments and the Constitution provide mechanisms to adapt while preserving core principles.
