  • Really solid advice

I found this podcast to be really helpful. The host seems like he has a lot of knowledge about mens issues , but I also like how he covers areas of science and research and then comes back around to practical advice. I’m not one much for research, but I find it interesting. But the practical advice is really good..

Understanding Masculinity: A Conversation with Dr. Andrew Smiler
Q: What is the ultimate goal of your book for clinical practice?
To provide cultural competence training and a practical model that clinicians can apply in real-world cases, enabling them to guide men through reconstructing healthier masculinities while remaining engaged in the client's life and goals.
Understanding Masculinity: A Conversation with Dr. Andrew Smiler
Q: How should therapists address the emotional openness of male clients who have learned to withhold feelings?
Therapists should explicitly invite safe, nonjudgmental conversations about emotions, connect clients with trusted peers or mentors, and frame emotional vulnerability as a strength linked to better relationships and health, rather than a sign of weakness.
Understanding Masculinity: A Conversation with Dr. Andrew Smiler
Q: What are the practical implications of your Multifaceted Masculinity Framework for clinicians working with men?
Clinicians should use the MFMF to map a client's masculine criteria, achievement pressures, and identity scripts, then actively introduce alternative voices and allies into the client's internal 'locker room' to broaden emotional expression and reduce defensiveness.
RISE: The Model That Changed JD Tremblay's Life
Q: What was the thinking behind the Hunger for More title, and how does it communicate the book's big idea?
The title frames hunger as a universal need for engagement with opportunities, contrasting healthy striving with victim mentality, and uses the David and Goliath story to illustrate rising from perceived low status to achieve remarkable feats.
The Man Behind Positive Masculinity: Interview with Dr. Mark Kiselica
Q: How do you define positive masculinity and distinguish it from other masculinities?
Positive masculinity is framed as pro-social attitudes and behaviors expressed in male-specific ways, emphasizing caring, responsibility, protective roles, and community involvement, while recognizing that these traits are not exclusive to men and can be expressed across cultures. The definition acknowledges a masculine signature in virtue expression and the importance of role models and generative fatherhood.
