  • Great Podcast!

I’ve just discovered Czechast and the episodes are fascinating. I’ve not yet listened to all of them but I will. I’m a US journalist and podcaster with one foot in Prague (my husband’s grandfather came to the US from a tiny village near Tabor) and the other in the US and I played the episode with Ivan Kytka twice. It was just so interesting! Also the 2 “Czechia” episodes with the excellent history lesson. Personally I hate the name and so do all my Prague-based friends (none originally from Mora... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From Havel's “blbá nálada” to today: Petr Dudek reflects on Czech media, politics, and society
Q: How has the access and angle to political interviews changed for Czech media?
Politicians increasingly curate their media presence, often favoring friendly outlets, which makes it harder to present a balanced view; journalists must navigate offices and gatekeepers to secure voices from across the spectrum.
From Havel's “blbá nálada” to today: Petr Dudek reflects on Czech media, politics, and society
Q: What comparison do you draw between Havel's 'bilbánálada' and today's Czech public mood?
The mood now is arguably worse, with less robust public discourse and more challenges to independent journalism, though the context and media landscape have evolved with new technologies and political dynamics.
Amnesty’s Martina Nejedlá on Czechia’s human rights record
Q: Are politicians reflecting public attitudes or actively shaping them?
She argues that while some voters may share hostile views, the responsible leaders have a duty to avoid spreading disinformation and to engage in constructive dialogue with civil society to promote human rights and integration.
Amnesty’s Martina Nejedlá on Czechia’s human rights record
Q: You know, I wonder how much of a role does political rhetoric play here? Obviously, we've got Freedom and Direct Democracy Party in the government now, which is openly anti-immigrant and quite hostile to Ukrainians as well.
Martina Nejedlá explains that politicians' rhetoric can shape public opinion and turn into policy pressures, but she believes many Czech citizens are not the majority at heart and that dangerous rhetoric should be countered to protect equal living conditions for newcomers.
Strong industry, slower decisions: Czechia’s place in NATO readiness ranking
Q: How can Czechia preload decisions before a crisis to avoid delays once a crisis hits?
Preloading decisions involves identifying measures that could be activated in higher crisis levels, such as using private lands for military equipment deployment and leveraging local authorities' infrastructure, which would save valuable time during an actual crisis.
