  • Great Podcast!

I’ve just discovered Czechast and the episodes are fascinating. I’ve not yet listened to all of them but I will. I’m a US journalist and podcaster with one foot in Prague (my husband’s grandfather came to the US from a tiny village near Tabor) and the other in the US and I played the episode with Ivan Kytka twice. It was just so interesting! Also the 2 “Czechia” episodes with the excellent history lesson. Personally I hate the name and so do all my Prague-based friends (none originally from Mora... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Blood in Bohemia: how a sermon in Prague turned into a massacre in 1419
Q: What actually triggered the defenestration in 1419, and how did a sermon escalate into violence?
The trigger was a combination of religious reform demands, arrests of Hussite supporters, and a charged crowd moving from a mass to the town hall, where negotiations failed and the prisoners were released only by force, leading to a deadly massacre and a shift from religious conflict to political war.
Blood in Bohemia: the violent legend of the Maidens’ War
Q: So how did Czech historians and Czech writers deal with this story, did they treat it as fact or as legend, or did they embellish it?
Historians like Palacký were skeptical, while later writers like Jirásek amplified the tale for dramatic and nationalistic purposes, shaping modern perceptions of Czech history even as the line between fact and fiction blurred.
Blood in Bohemia: the violent legend of the Maidens’ War
Q: So Rob, today, we need to say something very clearly right at the start. What we are dealing with today is not a proven historical event. It is a myth.
They discuss the Maidens' War as a myth first recorded in Cosmas and later amplified by chroniclers and nationalist writers, emphasizing that it is a story with meaning and moral warnings rather than a strict historical fact.
Alejandro Cruz on life in Prague: a Mexican perspective on culture, identity and belonging
Q: Let me just ask you, you are Mexican, as you rightly said. Why Prague?
Alejandro explains that Prague chose him, returning after an earlier stay and recognizing how the city has transformed, which makes it feel like home and a place where his work and identity could grow.
From Havel's “blbá nálada” to today: Petr Dudek reflects on Czech media, politics, and society
Q: How has the access and angle to political interviews changed for Czech media?
Politicians increasingly curate their media presence, often favoring friendly outlets, which makes it harder to present a balanced view; journalists must navigate offices and gatekeepers to secure voices from across the spectrum.
