I am an American college student who is currently in the process of applying for a Fulbright Scholarship in Czechia for the 2024-2025 school year. This program has been one of the most useful tools I have found for keeping up with current events in Czechia from across the Atlantic, and I feel as though it has been incredibly helpful in helping prepare my Fulbright application.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

William Kentridge exhibition at Kunsthalle, Elias Grandy on leading the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, interview with linguist Jan Bičovský
Q: What does it feel like taking over as a chief conductor in this year, in this special year marking the 100th anniversary?
The conductor describes a mix of excitement, honor, and humility given the century-long history, expressing a commitment to celebrate the orchestra's legacy while shaping its future.
Petr Dudek: why Czech mood today may be worse than Havel's "blbá nálada" in the 1990s
Q: How has the relationship between politicians and the media changed over time, especially in inviting officials to speak on air?
Politicians increasingly select media friendly to them, making it harder to get a balanced, diverse set of interviews; journalists must navigate non-responsive offices and strategic party communications.
Czechia’s defence readiness: strong foundations, slower decisions
Q: Where does Czechia fit on the fast versus slow responder spectrum, and what are the implications for NATO deterrence?
Czechia sits toward the faster end among mid-tier to higher-tier countries, but improvement requires speeding up decision processes and procurement while preserving democratic oversight.
Czechia’s defence readiness: strong foundations, slower decisions
Q: How important is the role of Czechia's defense industry in deterrence, and does it compensate for weaker operational readiness?
The defense industry is essential to deterrence and an enabler of capability maintenance; it complements, but does not replace, the need for actual readiness and fast decision-making.
Czechia’s defence readiness: strong foundations, slower decisions
Q: From your perspective, what are the three most urgent reforms that Czechia should implement to improve readiness?
The three reforms focus on public support for security, faster defense investment aligned with NATO targets, and a much closer government–industry relationship to shorten procurement cycles without sacrificing democratic safeguards.
