Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

William Kentridge exhibition at Kunsthalle, Elias Grandy on leading the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, interview with linguist Jan Bičovský
Q: Which languages have you personally recorded for the Voices of Dead Languages project?
We recorded several, including Old High German, Old English, Gothic, Latin, Greek, Old Church Slavonic, Acadian, Old Chinese, and a range of other reconstructed languages; some are fully reconstructed with no living speakers, so the recordings are based on scholarly inference and available textual evidence.
William Kentridge exhibition at Kunsthalle, Elias Grandy on leading the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, interview with linguist Jan Bičovský
Q: Could you take us in simple terms through the process of reconstructing a language?
We rely on written sources across different periods and scripts, recognizing that only a fraction of what existed survives now; by comparing related languages and using linguistic typology, we infer pronunciation patterns and reconstruct grammatical forms to create a plausible representation of how those languages might have sounded.
Petr Dudek: why Czech mood today may be worse than Havel's "blbá nálada" in the 1990s
Q: How has the relationship between politicians and the public media changed over the years, especially regarding access to interviews and balanced coverage?
Access has become harder; politicians often delay or avoid interviews, and media outlets must navigate party structures and strategic messaging, leading to fewer opportunities for diverse perspectives and a more one-sided or controlled public discourse.
Petr Dudek: why Czech mood today may be worse than Havel's "blbá nálada" in the 1990s
Q: So what does it mean that you were responsible for the English-speaking countries in the president's office, and what did that role involve?
It involved handling communications with English-speaking countries, managing submissions in English, and protecting the president from unnecessary or time-wasting contacts, which gave me a unique insider view of how a presidency operates in a changeable political environment.
Prague City Tourism, new implants, Czech "Route 66", financing of public media
Q: How does the city support growth in higher-spending visitors?
The city follows a 2024–2027 tourism strategy focused on balance, sustainability, collaboration with partners, and data-driven insights to stay competitive and resilient.
