I read an interesting article in The Guardian on Trump and US history by David Reynolds so was interested to hear the Creating History podcast. On the basis of the first episode of Summitry the tone is studied, thoughtful and illuminating but has yet to develop the warmth and back and forth of podcasts like TRIH or WHWOMYT. One annoying element was the preponderance of ads which seemed to come thick and fast in the first half. At one point the ads seemed longer than the section of pod between th... more
This is an excellent podcast by Professor David Reynolds and producer Russell Barnes! If you are interested in history, this is a must listen! Barnes and Reynolds have a long history of making great BBC documentaries about a wide range of historical topics. This latest series is all about the history of "Summits" or grand diplomatic meetings of two or more heads of state that have dramatic and lasting consequences for the rest of the world.
Creating Churchill as written and presented by David Reynolds and Russell Barnes is absolutely outstanding. A 10/10 in every way. I should state that I am a fan of WSC and have read widely about him and around him. However, this Podcast based on David Reynolds recent book “Mirrors of Greatness” is captivating in every way. Understanding the relationships that Churchill enjoyed and or endured with 10 key people including that of his father Randolph and wife Clementine.
Creating Churchill is full of fascinating details about his close relationships with Chamberlain, Roosevelt, Mussolini and Stalin, and his views of Hitler and Napoleon, and through the anecdotes we learn much about the character of his allies and adversaries too. Through it all comes a deeper insight into Churchill’s views and methods, and it leaves you with great respect for his achievements through speeches, tactics and engagement with friend and foe.
Even keen Churchill fans will learn new, ... more
