I would give my right kidney to meet Alisha for coffee in real life (in my mind we are best friends). I love starting my morning with her and her little bits of history!

  • BEST history podcast out there!

  • Dr Anita Chan on her book about predatory Eugenics

Worst presentation of excellent information ever, I’m sorry to say. 4 stars for importance of work & 1 star for presentation quality. Dr. Chan’s rate of speech is horribly fast! Her over-use of academic or professional jargon, unwaveringly flat tone, and never stopping to take a breath or modulate left me with knots in my stomach. The interviewer asked only very few questions because the avalanche-sized quantity of verbiage that followed each question did not allow 2-way discussion. I didn’t kno... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Power of the Dress: Dr. Elizabeth Block on Gilded Age Fashion
Q: What motivated you to craft a book analyzing and highlighting women's Gilded Age fashions?
Dr. Block expresses a deep fascination with women of the era, their agency in commissioning fashion, and the way clothing reflected power, social networks, and daily life, which she explored through letters, diaries, and extensive research.
Misplaced Rage: Fear and Fury with Heather Ann Thompson
Q: How did the media shape public perception after the shooting, and what role did Rupert Murdoch and his outlets play?
Thompson argues that Murdoch's acquisition of the New York Post and the sensationalized, context-poor reporting contributed to a narrative that blamed the victims and celebrated the attacker, thereby normalizing crime and influencing policy debates and political alignments in ways that extended beyond New York to national discourse.
Misplaced Rage: Fear and Fury with Heather Ann Thompson
Q: What happened on the subway car in December 1984 and what motivated your research into the case?
The incident involved a white man firing at four Black teenagers on a New York City subway car, a moment Thompson frames as emblematic of white racial rage that was being amplified by the political and media landscape of the time. Her research seeks to understand how this event reflects broader social, economic, and political dynamics of the Reagan era and how it resonates with violence and policy today.
Complicated Legacies: Thy Will Be Done with John Garrison Marks
Q: How has public history evolved in presenting Washington's legacy, and what role do sites like Mount Vernon play in shaping this conversation?
The guest explains that public history increasingly aims to ground visitors in a shared foundation while facilitating conversations, noting Mount Vernon's recent efforts to acknowledge slavery, the burial grounds of enslaved people, and ongoing debates about the proper place of slavery in Washington's legacy within national memory.
Complicated Legacies: Thy Will Be Done with John Garrison Marks
Q: What prompted your decision to research the long-contested legacy of George Washington's involvement in the slave trade?
The host introduces the topic by asking why the author chose to examine Washington's slaveholding and emancipation, prompting the guest to discuss how public memory and contemporary events around the 250th anniversary shaped his focus, and how different moments in American history have used Washington to argue about slavery and race.
