Reviews

4.6 out of 5 stars from 6.2k ratings
  • Lots of lengthy ads

Great content but the ads are frequent and abnormally long. For example, the episode I just listened to was over 14 minutes of ads and only 18 minutes of content. That’s unreasonable yet unfortunately not uncommon for this podcast.

  • Bias

I find the show racist and christaphobic. Slanted to a woke agenda.

  • It’s the best

The one star reviews must be from people who are butthurt that their perceived version of history doesn’t align with their beliefs. Guess what!? It’s still history whether you believe it or not. Keep it up, nerds! We love you!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Malcolm Gladwell on Reconstruction’s Unfinished Questions
Q: Tell us that story about the Compromise of 1877 and how it ends Reconstruction.
The hosts explain the Wormley Hotel deal that allowed Rutherford Hayes to win the presidency in exchange for removing Northern troops from the South, effectively ending Reconstruction and paving the way for decades of Jim Crow, while the guests stress this was a calculated political bet that had long-term consequences for racial justice.
Malcolm Gladwell on Reconstruction’s Unfinished Questions
Q: Did working on this material make you rethink the Obama era and what came after in any way? How did your thinking change as you thought about this history?
The discussion suggests the Obama era reinforces a broader pattern of backlash in American politics; yet Gladwell and Obama's readings push toward seeing Reconstruction as an ongoing process, not a locked chapter, with the idea that backlashes can coexist with progress and constitutional gains.
Malcolm Gladwell on Reconstruction’s Unfinished Questions
Q: What was that like for you? Anything strike you about the way that he approached this material or answered your questions?
Gladwell describes the process as allowing a deep, sometimes messy exploration of Reconstruction, focusing on how leaders like Johnson misjudged the political calculations and how Schurz offered a brutally honest account that challenged the administration, ultimately shaping a more nuanced understanding of the era.
A Mob Boss Starts A Movement
Q: How did Joe Colombo turn himself into a public figure and civil rights advocate while being tied to organized crime?
He leveraged media access, popular support, and alliances with unions and politicians to push for a public, reformist image, while quietly orchestrating loyalty and power within the mafia; his public stance created a clash between civil rights activism and criminal networks that made him a polarizing figure.
Introducing: Family Lore
Q: Who was the woman in the lathe photograph, and how was her identity finally confirmed?
Naomi Parker was identified as the woman in the lathe after Jim Kimball located original prints, confirmed via a reverse-image search, and corroborated by Naomi and her sister, ultimately producing a reliable primary source.
