  • Interesting, but …

I really enjoy this pod. Informative and well delivered. BUT could you reduce the volume on the intro music. It’s far too loud for your voices and it’s jarring.

  • Less "am I right" and "do you agree"

LOVE this podcast but encourage less asking of "am I right ", "do you agree". Breaks the flow. just dialogue. just ask the question or make the observation and let the guest go from there.

  • Repeats

It’d b marvy if the repeat episodes were announced. We usually think “Oh good, a new episode,” but get disappointed when we start to listen and find out we’ve been duped!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Agatha Christie and the English Country House
Q: What makes the country-house setting so effective for murder mysteries?
The combination of isolation, history, a large staff, and layered social dynamics creates a atmosphere where secrets can hide and puzzles can unfold, which Christie and others exploited in their plots.
Agatha Christie and the English Country House
Q: When did British murder mysteries really begin? Did we start with Sherlock Holmes?
It actually happened before that, with early detective fiction and popular press fueling public appetite for crime stories long before Sherlock Holmes.
The House that Launched the Gilded Age: The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion
Q: From your perspective, what makes this mansion a foundational chapter of the Gilded Age in American homes?
It represents a shift where wealth is publicly displayed through architecture, interiors, and the whole environmental ensemble, signaling the era's new social contract between money, taste, and national identity.
Body Snatchers! The Stolen Body of A.T. Stewart
Q: Why were body-snatchers so active during the Revolutionary War era in the United States?
Dissections needed corpses, and wars created a supply of unidentified bodies; this era also saw emerging medical schools that required cadavers, making snatching more common.
New York’s Gilded Age Black Elite (Encore)
Q: So Carla, one point I wanna come back to a little bit is this notion of black identity, particularly in the early 19th century. Can you talk about that?
I made this discovery when I was able to trace my family back to my great-great grandparents.
