  • Makes you think

Your podcast is different because it’s not so humor jampacked. I like information with hard questions.

Oh, and I learned something about this new technology. If I hear one of those ads I don’t like I just push a button and it just fast forwards through it. It’s really cool. Just a tap and it’s all gone. Hope you still get a piece of the action. I know this isn’t volunteer work.

Q: Tell me about the challenges Keeley faced in setting up the exchange, given the different statuses of people in Asia versus diaspora communities.
Keeley faced a web of complications, including identifying and locating potential passengers on both sides, dealing with imprisonments and parole decisions, navigating military and FBI resistance, and managing the asymmetry between foreign nationals in Asia and Japanese descendants abroad, all while trying to uphold international law and humanitarian commitments.
From Big Village to Global Power: The Thousand-Year Rise of Moscow, Russia's Fortress Capital
Q: With your survey into Moscow, how does this make sense of things today?
The guest discusses how Moscow's autocratic roots and fortress mindset shape contemporary Russian politics and the persistence of centralized power, including the political narratives used to frame the war in Ukraine.
From Big Village to Global Power: The Thousand-Year Rise of Moscow, Russia's Fortress Capital
Q: So tell me about our friend Yuri, who is what we consider a founder, at least celebrated by different commemorations of the settlement and founding of Moscow.
Simon Morrison explains Yuri Dolgoruky as a Kiev prince associated with Moscow's founding, highlighting how early figures are used in Moscow's mythology to justify its status and the city's central role in later Russian state-building.
Scientists Who Were Ridiculed, Exiled, and Imprisoned for Being Right
Q: Tell me a story and tell me about the pushback.
The interview frames pushback as a recurring pattern in science where new ideas disrupt established power structures; we hear about Gordon, Semmelweis, Louis, and Pasteur to illustrate how institutional inertia, politics, and personal risk shape whether contrarian ideas survive.
From Bronze to Blood: How the Sword Became Humanity's First Murder Weapon
Q: Why is pattern welding important in the story of this sword?
Pattern welding was used to even out impurities, create stronger and more flexible blades, and produce intricate decorative patterns, enabling swords to be both hard and supple at the same time.
