  • Shame

Been listening for years and enjoy most of the content but the resent ads have been too much. Gonna turn off my subscription for a few months and I hope they drop the Kirk.

  • Wide range of topics

Solid history podcast! I enjoy that the topics vary greatly from episode to episode.

Looking through some of the bad reviews people left for this show it seems like they are all politically driven reviews. If you are a NORMAL (not overly politicized) person who likes history you will likely enjoy this show. Im not very political and have not picked up on anything of the sort coming from the host.

I think most of the people who left the bad reviews have some personal issues they need to addre... more

  • Very good podcasts

I do enjoy flicking through your podcasts. Being honest, I don’t listen to all, I am selective. This podcast drew me, because of the photo of Peter Jones on the introduction page. I googled to see if he was a Historian? The photo they chose is of the British Entrepreneur. Sorry for the wrong critique, I do enjoy many of the subjects you cover.

  • Makes you think

Your podcast is different because it’s not so humor jampacked. I like information with hard questions.

Oh, and I learned something about this new technology. If I hear one of those ads I don’t like I just push a button and it just fast forwards through it. It’s really cool. Just a tap and it’s all gone. Hope you still get a piece of the action. I know this isn’t volunteer work.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Nobels Built Russia’s Oil Industry, Invented Dynamite and the Oil Tanker, But Were Still Crushed by the Bolshevik Revolution
Q: Can you walk us through the moment Lenin signs away the Nobel Empire and what that did to the family's Fortune?
Lenin's nationalization decree erased the Nobels' three-generation-old enterprise overnight, turning a global oil powerhouse into a state-controlled asset and forcing the family into exile and reorganization, while highlighting the fragility of private capital under a centralized regime.
Ford’s Auto Domination Came From a 1909 Race Across America Through Mud-Choked Roads
Q: What was the Pathfinder drive like and how did it set the stage for the Ocean to Ocean Race of 1909?
It established the brutal, logistically complex reality of cross-country travel in fragile early cars, underscoring why the later race would become a proving ground for engineering, dealer networks, and national publicity.
How the Dollar Created America (Part 1)
Q: How did the dollar originate before the United States existed?
The guest explains that the dollar originated as a widely used silver coin from the Joachimsthal mine that spread through Europe and into America as a preferred means of large-value transactions, long before American sovereignty claimed it as a national currency.
Europe Dominated Because It Never Stopped Fighting Itself
Q: Why did you start the narrative with Marathon?
Beaton explains that Marathon provides a clear, pivotal moment to study how Europe was imagined and narrated, setting up a framework where subsequent conflicts and stories reinforce the idea of a Europe defined in opposition to Asia and the East.
95% of Ancient Greek Theater Is Gone. Here's How One Classicist Resurrected 500 Lost Playwrights
Q: What makes the fragments in Stobaeus so valuable for modern readers?
Stobaeus curates quotations that are punchy and morally resonant, allowing us to glimpse the dramatic voice of ancient playwrights even when full texts are lost.
