  • Almost!

You have a title of what “Watergate does not bother me” and you spend a minute on it. I thought you might dive into the fake outrage culture of taking events like ‘Watergate’ or ‘Jan 6’ and treat it as something comparable to ‘9/11’ or ‘Pearl Harbor” but, no.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Was Abortion Always Controversial? From the Pilgrims to Dobbs v. Jackson
Q: What is the significance of the Dobbs decision in changing access today?
Dobbs overturned Roe, returning abortion regulation to the states, which has created a patchwork system where access is highly dependent on geography, leading some to travel long distances and face legal and logistical hurdles to obtain care.
Was Abortion Always Controversial? From the Pilgrims to Dobbs v. Jackson
Q: How did the political landscape shift to make abortion a hot-button issue?
Shifts tied to the rise of Christian right activism, the Reagan era, and later legal battles around Roe and Dobbs transformed abortion into a central political fault line, with battles over who controls reproductive rights reflecting deeper struggles over constitutional ideals and racial power structures.
Was Abortion Always Controversial? From the Pilgrims to Dobbs v. Jackson
Q: What were the norms and laws around abortion in the colonial era?
Abortion was practiced in the colonies and even before, with most reproductive health care historically provided by women, including midwives; abortion knowledge and techniques were passed down privately, and there was not a universal criminal framework at that time.
Why Is Congress So Old? And How Can We Change This?
Q: What reforms could meaningfully alter Congress's current dynamics?
Reforms like ending Citizens United, implementing small-donor public financing, raising congressional pay, considering age or term limits, and creating a tech-focused committee could rebalance power and reduce the influence of money and special interests.
Why Is Congress So Old? And How Can We Change This?
Q: What role has money played in shaping Congress over the last several decades, and how do Buckley v. Vallejo and Citizens United fit in?
Money shifted from campaign funds to leadership packs and party dues, enabling donors to influence committee assignments and leadership; Buckley v. Vallejo started the shift by striking spending limits, and Citizens United amplified outside money, increasing fundraising pressure on legislators.
