Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Sundari Johansen & Anjali Rao: On Tantra, Yoga, and Embodied Resistance
Q: What motivated you to write Yoga as Embodied Resistance, and how did your personal experiences shape the book?
The book grew from questioning why women and marginalized groups were largely absent from canonical yoga history and using storytelling to foreground feminist perspectives and lived resistance. Fieldwork in Kamakhya and archival projects in Assam shaped a feminist, material, and historical approach to yoga studies.

Q: What is tantra, and how does it relate to embodiment and liberation?
Tantra is an embodied, practice-oriented mystical tradition that seeks liberation while living in the world. It emphasizes engaging the body and a wide range of emotions as a path to awakening, rather than rejecting the body as illusion.
Sundari Johansen & Anjali Rao: On Tantra, Yoga, and Embodied Resistance
Q: Within this larger field of Hinduism, how do you define Hinduism for us?
Hinduism is not a monolith but a plural, heterogeneous set of beliefs and practices. It has no single founder and includes diverse theistic, non-theistic, and philosophical traditions, with caste dynamics playing a central role in historical and contemporary contexts.
Alka Arora, Jeanine M. Canty, and Sara H. Salazar: Multicultural Women’s Voices on Ecological and Social Healing
Q: What do you see as the most important work we can be doing right now?
Jeanine suggests that healing begins with unplugging from constant fear and connecting to our spirits and communities.
Alka Arora, Jeanine M. Canty, and Sara H. Salazar: Multicultural Women’s Voices on Ecological and Social Healing
