The Starling is the best book I have ever read. Thank you so much for bringing this book to my attention and thanks to my daughter, Tara, for lending it to me. You both work so well together and I love every episode.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Interview - Kerry Clare and Definitely Thriving
Q: Tell us about Definitely Thriving and its protagonist, Clemence.
Clemence is rebuilding her life after ending her marriage through unconventional choices, finding community, and seeking a life with meaning beyond conventional expectations.
Interview - Dr. Nora Gold and Doubles
Q: How did you approach the ending, and why do you think readers react to it as both real and hopeful?
The ending remains true to the character's reality—not a neat wrap-up—yet it preserves a sense of ongoing possibility through the protagonist's continued inner life and imagination, which many readers find powerful and believable.
Interview - Dr. Nora Gold and Doubles
Q: What drew you to make the main character unnamed, and what was the effect you were aiming for with that choice?
Leaving her nameless broadens the voice, allowing the character to speak for many girls in similar situations and giving the narrative a universal, collective resonance beyond a single person.
Interview - Dr. Nora Gold and Doubles
Q: So can you give our listeners a brief overview of Doubles, and how did you come to write this story at this time?
Doubles is set in 1968 in an institution for troubled youth and is told from the perspective of a 12-year-old girl. It centers on language as a survival tool—the protagonist uses math as her language. The story grew from a personal resonance with group homes I visited as a social worker, and while I didn't set out to write about a young adolescent, the experiences from that era crystallized into the narrative.
Interview - Alexis Stefanovich-Thomson and Opposite Sully's Gym
Q: And I understand, especially with mysteries, it's hard because of spoilers. But then also, how did you decide to write about James Earl Ray's connection to Toronto, which really blew my mind and I learned a lot of things I didn't know.
The author describes Opposite Sully's Gym as a mystery-thriller-historical novel centered on a Toronto rooming house during the 1960s, with James Earl Ray as a peripheral but intriguing figure. He emphasizes remaining faithful to historical dates while allowing fictional exploration of a possible Canadian connection or contacts, which is intentionally left open to interpretation and speculation within the story.
