  • Great Podcast. So informative!

Coaching with Mrs. B gives great insight to the difficulties that come with being a teaching coach within a school. This episode in particular uses data tracking and usage to track where support is most needed and how to provide that support, because not everyone starts in the same place. I like that Ms. B breaks down different ideas for how to start with a new teacher, especially ones that may not have had coaches before or don’t know how having a coach could benefit their classrooms. It is imp... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

275. Coaching Uncertified Teachers with Lindsay Deacon
Q: What are the two main areas of need for uncertified teachers when they start in a classroom?
The two core needs are limited awareness of pedagogy and a gap between having content expertise and the ability to break it down for students. Even those with strong content knowledge must learn how to translate that knowledge into effective instruction and student engagement.
275. Coaching Uncertified Teachers with Lindsay Deacon
Q: What is the typical background of an uncertified teacher and why is there an uptick in uncertified teachers in classrooms?
Uncertified teachers come from diverse careers and backgrounds; the data shows a broad mix rather than a single archetype, and the uptick is linked to teacher shortages and the appeal of people from other professions wanting to contribute to education. The key is recognizing potential in non-traditional entrants and providing robust onboarding and coaching to bridge gaps in pedagogy and classroom practice.
274. Social Justice in the Classroom with Rachael Lucille
Q: How can instructional coaches support social justice work when they don't control the curriculum?
Coaches can advocate through vocabulary and framing, use district- or school-approved materials creatively, and employ resources and books to seed conversations, while aligning with policy constraints and focusing on creating equitable classroom practices instead of forcing curriculum changes.
274. Social Justice in the Classroom with Rachael Lucille
Q: What does social justice work look like across different school levels, from elementary to high school?
It starts with simple, developmentally appropriate steps like inclusive language and normalizing differences in elementary, and gradually introduces historical context and the reasons behind inclusive practices as students get older, with high school presenting opportunities for more complex and potentially controversial topics.
270. Coaching Culture and the Four Types of Teachers with Nicole S. Turner
Q: Can you share those questions coaches can ask to assess their school's readiness for coaching?
Coaches should survey teachers to see how coaching is currently viewed, identify anticipated challenges in introducing coaching as a school-improvement process, and list existing strengths to build on.
