  • Who was this for?

I was hesitant to listen to the May 9 podcast Beginners guide to the end. I was afraid it would resonate and make perfect sense. I’m not dying, but I figured I’d be crying by the end. You weren’t talking to me the melanoma pt, you weren’t even talking to me the nurse. It was something else- like this high level conversation that was hypothesis based. I’ve felt the podcasts shifting this way for a while now. Please be clear who you are talking to. To be fair I left 17 minutes on the tape.

  • Great info on science, caregiving and so much more

As a melanoma survivor and caregiver, this podcast is really great. Different topics every time. While some don’t necessarily seem relevant to me in the description, I listen anyway and am always so glad I did. I learn something new every time. Thanks for doing this, Aim at Melanoma!

Melanoma and Body Image
Q: How do you begin doing this work with people to shift body presentation or self-image in a way that restores quality of life?
I start with the person, focusing on the soul and life context, then integrate education, cognitive-behavioral therapy, coping and resilience work, and involve partners when relevant to address intimacy and sexuality. There is no one-size-fits-all recipe; we adapt tools to each family's situation.
Melanoma and Body Image
Q: Would you be willing to share with us how you arrived in this space, doing this work, and why you stay here?
I was blessed with robust training and leadership that valued whole-person care, which allowed me to pursue how disease affects not just the body but mind, spirit, and relationships. My approach starts with the person's why and life context, then builds from there using a toolbox of evidence-based strategies tailored to the individual and their family.
Caring Through Loss: A Conversation on Bereavement
Q: How did you become focused on grief and bereavement in cancer care?
Dr. Lichtenthal explains that personal loss, professional training, and a drive to develop interventions that help people frame grief and make meaning drew her into the field, with a strong emphasis on not harming patients and building an evidence base.
Cancer Is More Than a Diagnosis: Mind, Meaning, and Healing
Q: What makes the psychological experience of cancer unique compared to other psychiatric conditions?
Cancer can strike suddenly, disrupt both present and future, and trigger a constellation of normal but intense emotions; it often requires distinguishing acute adjustment reactions from longer‑term mood disorders, while recognizing the ongoing influence of treatment side effects on cognition and mood.
AYA Cancer Conversation: Navigating Young Adult Cancer
Q: What are some take home points or take-home resources for other AYAs going through survivorship?
Abby highlights practical resources like Stupid Cancer, First Descents retreats, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society survivorship resources, plus nutrition support available through LLS. She emphasizes seeking second opinions, staying connected with survivors, and using peer networks to navigate late effects, surveillance, and wellness.
