  • Great pod!

Fascinating content, thanks for doing this Mike! One suggestion, it seems like all the pauses have been edited out and I find it unnatural to listen to. Leaving some pauses would make it longer but easier to listen to. Presumably one could listen at a faster playback speed if desired.

  • One of the BEST yet!

GREAT discussion Mike and John! I would rate this as your best guest so far, Mike!

Awesome anecdotes from John that were on target: the IO-200 and 4-place aircraft easter eggs were a treat.

    Thank you both.

  • The More I Listen

The more I listen and learn, the more I want to know. Any aircraft owner who hasn't read Mike's books is going to be maintaining their aircraft more than they should but less than they need. Knowing how to listen to your aircraft and understanding what to maintain is becoming more science but most of the technicians seem to be singing incantations and wandering about groping for insights. Their lack of the diagnostic method and skills and subsequent failures have cost me mid-six figures. Let's ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Inside the Race to 100 Octane Unleaded AvGas : Chris D'Acosta of Swift Fuels:
Q: Why use STCs instead of pursuing a different pathway like PAFI for a drop-in replacement fuel?
STCs give the fuel producer control over the design and testing details and a clearer liability framework, while still allowing FAA oversight; PATH and PAFI are valuable but involve different risk/liability considerations and timeline dynamics.
Inside the Race to 100 Octane Unleaded AvGas : Chris D'Acosta of Swift Fuels:
Q: What is the scope of the current STC AML, and how broad is the engine/airframe coverage?
The current AML covers a substantial portion of Lycoming and Continental engines and a mix of airframes, with ongoing expansion and a plan to include more models through similarity analysis and selective testing, guided by FAA collaboration.
The Future of Flight Safety: Automation, Training & Hard-Won Lessons with Bruce Landsberg
Q: How did Landsberg describe the evolution of aviation safety culture and data usage?
He described moving from traditional training and anecdotal safety practices to data-driven approaches, including flight and engine data monitoring, borescope analysis, and AI-assisted maintenance insights to anticipate and prevent failures.
George Braly on Lean-of-Peak, G100UL, Certification Battles, and Why Aviation Myths Die Hard
Q: How did your early experiences shape your approach to certification and testing?
Early hands-on work, including instrumented engine testing and learning from MIT texts, taught me that real-world data and understanding of engine behavior beat textbook assumptions; this fueled our meticulous, data-driven approach to fuel injection and lean-burn strategies.
