Great stories and conversations here Sarah.

Would highly recommend Dec 16 episode: Breaking Into Agrech.

While a reliance on proven systems and generational experience is crucial for agriculture, its major evolutionary periods the world over have been driven by new people with great skills, new perspectives and an ability to challenge convention. Great to see more and more new shoulders to the wheels of food farming and Ag.

Better Outcomes, Not Lower Costs: rethinking agtech in horticulture, with Mark Trzaskoma
Q: What are the biggest 'silver bullets' you wish technology could deliver for horticulture?
Automated tractors for mowing, spraying, and harvesting, plus a robust app that runs smoothly across systems to capture operational data and guide decisions.
Better Outcomes, Not Lower Costs: rethinking agtech in horticulture, with Mark Trzaskoma
Q: What technologies have you trialed and what were the outcomes?
Trials ranged from harvest platforms to canopy redesign and data collection tools; some worked well when aligned with orchard layout, others failed when misaligned with space or workflow.
Better Outcomes, Not Lower Costs: rethinking agtech in horticulture, with Mark Trzaskoma
Q: Could you give us a snapshot of Battunga Orchards today and what a normal season looks like?
Battunga operates across three sites with multiple varieties; seasons are lengthy and variable, requiring coordinated labor and adaptable canopy systems to optimize harvest across locations.
Halter’s $2 billion question, with founder Craig Piggott
Q: Can you explain how Halter works for animal welfare and what safeguards exist?
The collar uses sound and vibration as cues and a low-energy pulse as reinforcement. Cows are trained to respond to audible cues instead of visual fences, which reduces energy use and enhances welfare. There are multiple safeguards, and independent research shows no increase in stress compared with traditional fencing, with strong health monitoring and supervision built in.
Halter’s $2 billion question, with founder Craig Piggott
Q: What were the biggest challenges in the early years of building Halter, and how did you overcome them?
The hardest part was integrating multiple subsystems—hardware reliability, power management, communication, and animal training—into one seamless user experience for farmers. We pushed for very high reliability (aiming for near-perfect uptime) and relied on cutting-edge hardware-software integration and field testing to gain farmer trust.
