Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. #38: Inside a 200-Page Plan Set: Managing the Five Oaks Build with PM Cade Hansen
Q: What does that process look like? And how does that differ from what you're used to?
Hansen describes using formal RFIs and submittals to document questions, decisions, and requested drawings. This process differs from his previous design-build work, where questions were often handled informally by phone or in person, and helps coordinate the architect, owners, consultants, and builder.
Ep. #38: Inside a 200-Page Plan Set: Managing the Five Oaks Build with PM Cade Hansen
Q: What is it about this project that makes it not a typical custom build?
Hansen points to the large, tree-protected site, difficult staging and sequencing, absence of drywall, curved ceilings, multiple levels, and polished concrete floors that the team must protect throughout construction.
Ep. #37: Landscape Shouldn't Be Last with Scott Cassel | The Austin Architect Series
Q: What other things do you think specific besides the climate, but to the topography and maybe the soil or any sort of geological elements that either are things you have to design around or considerations that you have to take?
Cassel identifies slope, soil, and trees as key regional considerations. Western Austin often has rock and slopes, while areas east of I-35 have expansive clay that can move hardscape, requiring different designs and structural installation.
Ep. #37: Landscape Shouldn't Be Last with Scott Cassel | The Austin Architect Series
Q: When do you get brought into the project, and what is actually typical?
Cassel says earlier involvement is best because landscape architects can collaborate with architects and builders on site placement, trees, grading, drainage, soils, and budget before opportunities are lost or costs become harder to manage.
Ep. #36: What Drives Design with Sarah Johnson | The Austin Architect Series
Q: What is your story and how did you get into architecture?
Sarah describes a family influence toward a licensed profession, choosing architecture over interior design, and her path through dual degrees and early collaboration with MFA that led to her current role.
