  • First stop for builders seeking updated building methods

Excellent practical building advice, lots of new product exposure and great high performance home tips. Matt does a good job of covering building methods across all the climate zones which couldn’t be more important. I had to take a star for frequently repeating his 08 crash story and increasing bible verses.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Science Behind Air Leakage Testing
Q: For someone who doesn't know The Energy Conservatory, who are you guys and what is your company all about?
Steve and Bill describe The Energy Conservatory as a company known for the Minneapolis Blower Door and for a broader suite of testing tools for building diagnostics, with a mission to help builders create better-performing, healthier, and more durable homes rather than just selling a product.
How Builders Use Blower Door Testing to Improve Airtightness
Q: What is the simplest improvements a builder can make first to improve blower door numbers?
Focus on sealing the attic and envelope details first, as fixing those leaks typically yields the largest drop in ACH50 and lowers energy use and moisture risk.
How Builders Use Blower Door Testing to Improve Airtightness
Q: Why should a builder own a blower door rather than always relying on a third party?
Owning the blower door provides immediate feedback, reduces delays, and enables ongoing risk management and design iteration, which helps meet aggressive performance targets and keeps projects moving.
How Builders Use Blower Door Testing to Improve Airtightness
Q: So first off, Sam, your title is literally BS, right?
Yes, the label is a playful nod to being a Building Scientist, but it frames a serious emphasis on practical, test-driven building science for airtightness and performance.
A Backup Water System?
Q: What are the typical use cases and who are the customers?
Customers range from doomsday preppers and single-family homes to large developers and ranches; installations can supply rainwater supplements, back-up water for boil notices, or full neighborhood water solutions, with modular units enabling redundancy for critical needs.
