  • Better than therapy

You guys help me so much.

Even if much of it is over my head, it is a reminder of the thoughtfulness req’d to take care of a home.

Sadly the so-called professionals who come to my home & take all my money do nothing but mess it up more.

On a less negative note, I love learning, and tools, and taking care of my old home to the extent I can… and I really enjoy listening.

Thank you so much! I admire y’all

[Where are the thoughtful ppl for my old house ;( ]

  • lots of yammering, not much research

So much time with the hosts yapping back and forth with each other or diving off on a tangent and not addressing the question at hand; less than half is actual relevant info.

The info that is presented doesn’t seem to be researched at all, like the hosts are just seeing the question for the first time and then just answering based on their personal knowledge. I’ve given it a few tries, but they don’t deliver much actual info, and a good bit of what they are delivering is inaccurate and/or inco... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#731: Risks of CO, Proper Painting Sequence, and Detailing Felt WRBs
Q: What is a practical takeaway for homeowners dealing with outsize hot water needs after a remodel?
Consider planning for future demand with an appropriately sized main water heater plus supplemental storage, and be ready to adjust operation modes (heat-pump vs electric) to optimize recovery time and energy use.
#731: Risks of CO, Proper Painting Sequence, and Detailing Felt WRBs
Q: What was the first hour rating on the heat pump water heater, and how did that affect their total hot water availability?
The team explains the first hour rating as the amount of hot water produced at startup, and with an added auxiliary tank the system could reach close to 95 gallons initially, though recovery and ongoing usage remained a challenge.
#732: Indoor Humidity, Spreading Kneewalls, and Interior Air Barriers
Q: What is the best approach to fix Benoît's knee-wall and ridge-beam situation on Wolf Island?
Most likely a ridge-beam solution with careful shoring and an engineered beam, placed with proper footing support, plus coordination with an engineer to size and position the beam and posts so the load path returns to the foundation.
#727: Dehumidification, Freestanding Tubs, and Crawlspace Vapor Barriers
Q: If the tub/shower area is open and the grout line runs to the edge of the tub, where is the actual wet-area boundary and how far does it extend?
The hosts discuss that the code boundary typically follows the edge of the tub and extends horizontally a certain distance, but it varies by jurisdiction and the presence of an open shower. They note that determining the boundary requires confirmation from the local electrical inspector and the specific municipality's interpretation, especially when both tub and shower areas are open to a common wet space.
#727: Dehumidification, Freestanding Tubs, and Crawlspace Vapor Barriers
Q: Given the bathroom layout with a freestanding tub and a long glass wall between the tub and shower, does the nearby light fixture need to be wet-rated or just damp-rated?
The panelists explain that it depends on whether the fixture is considered to be in a wet zone by local code and how exposed the fixture is to water. A wet-rated fixture would be required if it is within the defined distance from sources of water, but in many cases a damp-rated or protected setup could suffice if the fixture is shielded and properly installed, though ultimately the local inspector's interpretation governs.
