  • Great podcast!

Steve and Peter are great, on the downside Jake is painful to listen to. I wish they would drop him from the podcast. His constant immaturity and insecurities really hold back the show.

Pretty negative on other creators when Jake doesn’t agree that there could be another way. It’s a post frame because it’s not built with poles. Way to be open minded. Those buildings are easily assembled by 2 guys and 1 machine. They can be engineered to meet desired local loads. Maybe educate yourself on how people are building homes with post frame buildings.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

153 - Wall Details That Actually Work: Water, Air & Rainscreens
Q: Should I buck the windows and doors out three-quarter inches in a rain screen, or keep them in line with the WRB?
Typically you don't need to push openings outward; keeping them in line with the WRB or inward helps protect the flashing and reduces exposure, though local conditions and project details may justify adjustments; flashing details should be tied back to the WRB.
152 - Thermal & Structural Loads: Insulation, Wood, and Concrete
Q: What about thermal bridging with sill plates and interior insulation – is an exterior continuous insulation approach worth it in climate zone 5A?
They acknowledge that while external continuous insulation reduces thermal bridging, it may not be cost-effective in every project, and in many cases adding insulation in the attic or improving air sealing can yield comparable energy savings with lower cost.
152 - Thermal & Structural Loads: Insulation, Wood, and Concrete
Q: Are there any issues with insulated slabs or rafts under compression and movement from non-load bearing walls or tile areas?
The hosts discuss that, in many cases, two layers of Advantech on a raft over compressed stone can handle significant loads, and that the limiting factor is typically the weakest link in the assembly, not the insulation panel itself; they emphasize that properly engineered connections and understanding load paths are critical.
148 - Dumb Ideas? Vented Crawlspaces & Over-Insulating Window Frames
Q: What does it mean to over-insulate a window frame?
Over-insulation of window frames does not yield significant energy savings and can lead to water management issues, making it a poor investment.
148 - Dumb Ideas? Vented Crawlspaces & Over-Insulating Window Frames
Q: Can heated floors be a solution to controlling the environment in a crawl space?
Heated floors might help but it's more about encapsulating the crawl space and addressing moisture control effectively.
