Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Tayler Peavey - It Doesn't Have to be Perfect to be Good
Q: What changed in your training to prepare for your first trail race, and what was that first experience like?
Training became a mix of trail work (hill workouts, long runs on trails) and continued road training, with emphasis on balancing strength and technique. The first trail race taught me that I could push through uncertainty, a moment of learning to race on technical surfaces and trusting the process.
Tayler Peavey - It Doesn't Have to be Perfect to be Good
Q: Thanks for joining us today. How did trails first enter your life and what sparked your interest in shifting from roads to trails?
I started dealing with health and pelvic issues, but as I recovered in 2022–2023 I connected with a coach who encouraged me to explore trails while staying on roads too. The transition was gradual, built on improving health, confidence, and a willingness to mix seasons and learn on technical terrain.
Shelby Houlihan - Trail Runner?
Q: How have you managed the transition back to competition after the ban and what have you learned about yourself?
It was incredibly hard, but I focused on rebuilding gradually, listening to coaches, managing expectations, and pursuing new avenues like mental performance coaching. The return taught me to value growth, patience, and the importance of identity beyond racing.
Shelby Houlihan - Trail Runner?
Q: What did the 2016 Olympic Trials experience mean to you and how did it change your outlook on your career?
Qualifying and finishing second at the trials was a dream realized and showed that there was more potential to unlock. It gave me confidence that I could compete with the best, though it also highlighted how much room there was to grow and how competitive the field would always be.
Shelby Houlihan - Trail Runner?
Q: Talk about how you ended up choosing Bowerman Track Club and what that transition looked like.
I evaluated different pro options, visited teams, and decided Bowerman because of the people, the environment, and the sense that I could learn how to be a pro from the best. It felt like the right fit to push my limits while learning how to balance competing and life in a sustainable way.
