  • Not Worth your Time

I’ve listened to many episodes to see if this is worth listening to regularly. Background: I am an energy professional. I have not heard anything interesting or revelatory in this podcast. The last straw was the CERA week episode. The content was so high level and bland and uninteresting that I’ve decided to remove this show from my list. This is a show where moderators talk to moderators. Would not recommend.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Talking behind-the-meter power generation with Bloom Energy (Ep. 234)
Q: How quickly can a Bloom fuel cell be brought online versus a turbine or reciprocating engine, and is an onsite battery necessary?
A Bloom fuel cell takes up to 12 hours to reach its optimal operating temperature from a cold start, but once running it can ramp and throttle rapidly without requiring a battery, using built-in supercaps to handle fast load variations; overall startup to full capacity is much faster than a turbine once online.
Talking behind-the-meter power generation with Bloom Energy (Ep. 234)
Q: From a cost perspective, how does the upfront capital expenditure of Bloom's fuel cells compare to turbines, and how do tax incentives affect the net cost?
The gross cost of a fuel cell is around $5,000 per kilowatt, but after applying tax credits (up to 40% under the new energy framework, or 30% previously), net CAPEX falls to about $3,000 per kilowatt, narrowing the gap with turbines while offering substantial efficiency and operational benefits.
Check please: European importers await CBAM bill as transitional phase ends (Ep. 232)
Q: What changes in sourcing strategy have been noted among large producers due to CBAM?
While it's still early days, producers are contemplating their strategies due to the anticipated effects of CBAM, but there's no concrete evidence of operational relocations yet.
Check please: European importers await CBAM bill as transitional phase ends (Ep. 232)
Q: What other industries is this going to apply to?
The CBAM aims to expand to all ETS sectors, including organic chemicals and refined products by 2030, but this implementation is still political and technically complex.
Check please: European importers await CBAM bill as transitional phase ends (Ep. 232)
Q: Is there any awareness among the general public about CBAM, or is it mainly among industry experts?
There is a lag in general public awareness mostly because the financial impacts of CBAM won't hit until later and geopolitical discussions overshadow it currently.
