Fished with Paul last June and I’m a flat lander but he was by far the best guide I’ve ever used! Coming to fish July 13th with two of my sons and 12 Okies. I just found the podcast and can’t stop listening. Venice is the best!

    Can’t wait Captain Paul!!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 9 - Jim Cox
Q: How did you transition from hockey broadcasting to the Gulf Coast fishing tournament scene and marlin events?
After moving to Mobile and meeting people in the marine world, I began combining my broadcast skills with fishing sponsorships and events, gradually turning opportunities at marlin tournaments into a full-fledged broadcasting and MC role across the Gulf Coast circuit.
Episode 9 - Jim Cox
Q: What drew you to a broadcasting career, and how did you start in radio and sports play-by-play?
I started as the nerdy kid who recorded games in my parents' basement, loved sports, and chased opportunities in local radio from a very young age, eventually becoming sports director and doing play-by-play for high school and college games.
Episode 7 - Tim Fortney
Q: What was Katrina like from the perspective of a rescue swimmer, and how did it shape your career?
Katrina was the defining mission, with overwhelming logistics and a relentless tempo that demonstrated the Coast Guard's reach. It highlighted the need for improvisation, extreme endurance, and teamwork under survival conditions, and it cemented SAR as the pinnacle of purpose for many rescuers.
Episode 4 - Josh Collier
Q: What was the biggest paycheck and how did Calcutta bets influence strategy?
He recalls big checks in the 60k-150k range for King Mackerel era events, with Calcutta bets sometimes driving 70k-plus weekend earnings, but later diminishing as betting shifted and some events folded.
Episode 4 - Josh Collier
Q: How long did you fish with Neil and what changed in the circuit over the years?
Josh explains that he fished with Neil for about 19 seasons, witnessing the King Michael scene evolve, the shift to blue marlin, and how the circuits reorganized around sponsorships and regional tournaments.
