Trophy trout, snook and wading the Lower Laguna Madre, with Capt. Aaron Cisneros
Q: How do you deal with the pressure of destination trips and high-demand clients when fishing down south?
I stay adaptable and transparent with clients, leveraging a patient, methodical approach; if I'm catching and someone isn't, I focus on coaching and being right there with them, and I remind clients that the bite requires understanding current, tide, and structure to find the best spots.
Trophy trout, snook and wading the Lower Laguna Madre, with Capt. Aaron Cisneros
Q: What was it like growing up in the fishing business, and how did that shape your approach on the water?
Growing up as a second-generation guide, I learned the craft from my father, starting out with straight artificial and wade fishing from a young age; the emphasis was on technique, sea-floor presentation, and learning to read the habitat so you could spot where fish would be and how to present lures effectively.
The little things you shouldn't forget when it comes to your boat.
Q: What would you recommend on that for the fuel you're putting in your boat?
Use non-ethanol fuel when possible or add a good stabilizer, keep the tank full during storage to prevent condensation, and avoid pouring in overly concentrated stabilizers that can clog injectors.
The little things you shouldn't forget when it comes to your boat.
Q: What are some things that you find could easily be avoided?
Fewer mistakes boil down to better fuel management and routine servicing; use stabilizers, prefer non-ethanol fuel when available, and avoid overloading with excessive stabilizer while ensuring the tank isn't left half-full for long periods.
The legendary Mark Nichols on tarpon, snook and not overthinking bait presentation.
Q: How has DOA evolved with new technology like 3D printing, and what does that mean for anglers?
Nichols discusses experimenting with 3D-printed baits and molds to streamline production and customize designs, indicating a shift toward rapid prototyping and on-demand manufacturing that could shorten the loop from idea to lure on the water.
