  • Favorite History Interview Podcast!

As a fan of Greco-Roman history and the ToldInStone YouTube channel I was excited to listen to listen to this podcast and learn more about ancient Greece and Rome. What I discovered is an amazing podcast not only about the past but about the present and how everyone in between those dates was influenced by the same topics. As a New Yorker, I never considered the impact of Greco-Roman and Egyptian architecture on my city but now I can’t walk down the street without thinking of Gilded Age architec... more

36 – The Late Bronze Age Collapse
Q: That's a good segue into the actual collapse; what metrics do archaeologists use to define the collapse of a civilization?
Collapse can be seen as a combination of network breakdown and societal decline. It involves the loss of centralized economy and administration, the diminishing capacity of elites, and a regression to a lower social, political, and economic state. It is often debated whether it is a true collapse or a transformation, but a systems perspective emphasizes the collapse of the interregional network that previously elevated these societies.
36 – The Late Bronze Age Collapse
Q: And to focus on the diplomatic aspect of its interconnectedness, what do the Amarna Letters tell us about relationships between the great and not-so-great powers of the Late Bronze Age?
The Amarna Letters show a lively exchange between the Egyptian pharaohs and many kings across the region, detailing royal marriages, diplomacy, and requests for gold. They offer a glimpse into how central authorities managed a web of alliances and vassal relationships, and they reveal both cooperation and tension within this international network.
36 – The Late Bronze Age Collapse
Q: Well, my pleasure too. So, to start with the beginning, could you please take us on a short tour of the Eastern Mediterranean around 1300 BC, before the collapse, and tell us what the most important states were in this era?
The end of the 14th century BC was the height of the Late Bronze Age, a highly interconnected world led by major powers in Egypt, the Hittites, and a network that included the Mycenaeans, Minoans, Cypriots, and Canaanites. These states engaged in extensive trade, diplomacy, and dynastic marriages, forming a globalized Mediterranean system famous for its wealth and exchange until the disruptions began to surface around 1250–1200 BC.
35 – The Spartan Mirage
Q: Was the Spartan government really so unusual by classical Greek standards?
Yes and no, it exhibits typical Greek systems of divided power but with unique elements such as the ephors and the Ger استخدام.
35 – The Spartan Mirage
Q: How much do we know about ancient Sparta, and why are our sources so problematic?
We have a large scattering of evidence but it's unsystematic, primarily due to a lack of native sources and gaps in historical records.
