  • Thoughtful Host

Sometimes it feels like podcast hosts are asking the same questions as everyone else. The result is that the guests seem bored to answer the questions. Nicole brings fresh questions and the result feels more like a conversation and less like the guest spouting the same canned lines and platitudes. It’s so nice to listen in on what feel like really authentic dialogues.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

CLASSIC EPISODE: The Resilience Myth with Soraya Chemaly
Q: When is it okay to not be resilient or to choose a different path for a moment?
Resilience isn't linear and is shaped by time, context, and support; it's important to practice self-compassion, allow for non-linear recovery, and recognize that belonging and care are foundational to sustained well-being.
CLASSIC EPISODE: The Resilience Myth with Soraya Chemaly
Q: What do we do when people are in times where strength and resilience may not be available or the healthiest choice?
Offer concrete support and alternatives to endurance through harm, recognizing that not every situation benefits from insisting on 'being strong' and that asking what someone needs can be more helpful than labeling them as resilient.
CLASSIC EPISODE: The Resilience Myth with Soraya Chemaly
Q: Okay. So let's do that with your guidance. What is good about resilience? And what are we actually talking about here?
Resilience has useful dimensions when we separate out hype from reality: it involves interdependence, community support, and adaptive strategies rather than simply becoming tough or denying limits; the value lies in mutual care and sustainable adaptation.
“You Look Fine”: Chronic Illness, Invisible Symptoms, and Rebuilding Self-Trust with Amy Kurtz | 418
Q: How can listeners support someone going through this?
Validate their experiences, avoid minimizing statements, ask what they need, and show up with empathy rather than unsolicited advice; empower them to participate in their own healing.
“You Look Fine”: Chronic Illness, Invisible Symptoms, and Rebuilding Self-Trust with Amy Kurtz | 418
Q: What part of the illness experience do you think medicine is addressing poorly?
Medicine often misses the ongoing emotional and psychological aftermath; it's not enough to just treat symptoms or provide a diagnosis, there needs to be space for processing trauma and rebuilding trust in one's body.
