  • Love this Podcast

I first heard Phil & Jeff on the Disruptors with Nancy. They made me laugh so I started listening. As a half-black Heinz 57 who was told I was going to be kidnapped by the Asian mafia, before this podcast I was completely ignorant of all things Asian America. This podcast has erased my misconceptions and made me realize I have more in common than not with my Asian American neighbors. Thanks Phil and Jeff - you rock!

  • Elevates, Educates and Entertains

This podcast is a gem. It’s also a cultural gem because it elevates AANHPIs, it has deeply educated me with so much of Asian Am. history that isn’t available unless you major in it, and, despite the deep social justice roots that drive so many do the conversations, this pod is also full of joy and laughter. Thank you Jeff Yang and Phil Yu for providing so much AANHPI pride.

  • Goes deep

Just started reading Gene Luen-Yang, so went looking for some interviews. They guys did and awesome job. Not afraid of a long interview, with wanderings, but all enjoyable. Laughed a lot.

They Call Us Asian American Voters

Immigration, the economy, health care, and voting access, with data showing shifting opinions on deportations and citizenship, and a strong emphasis on practical barriers and cost-of-living concerns.
They Call Us Third Act
Q: What was the impact of the Sundance premiere on your dad and on the film's reception?
Tad notes that his father attended Sundance at 88 and that the real emotional moment came later at the LA premiere when he received flowers, signaling a heartfelt connection with the community.
They Call Us Third Act
Q: How did filming for seven years and balancing roles as son and filmmaker influence the final film?
The process forced Tad to level up, lean into vulnerability, and let the camera act as a mediator for difficult conversations, resulting in a film that is both intimate and candid.
They Call Us Third Act
Q: What prompted you to make a documentary about your father, and how did the idea evolve?
Tad explains that the project began as a biographical tribute, but as his father's health declined, the film evolved into a dialogue about mortality, legacy, and their relationship, making it a personal exploration as much as a historical document.
They Call Us American Peril
Q: What are the key takeaways or actions you want listeners to consider after reading American Peril?
The guest highlights five recommendations: connect domestic racism with overseas imperialism, confront erasure, avoid perfect-victim rhetoric, transcend the hate crimes framework to address human needs, and build multiracial alliances, with emphasis on applying these ideas locally and through education and organizing.
