  • Felix, c’mon bro!

Liked Felix back in the day, but he can’t helm this podcast.

He’s never wrong, condescending and disrespectful to Elizabeth Spiers, and his Wealthy Class privilege seeps through every single out of touch take on the economic realities of the majority.

Where goeth the grace and humility?

  • Justice for Lindy

slate is now obsessed with dragging Lindy West as much as possible to cling to relevance and it’s really sad. I didn’t even like her book that much but I don’t think that it’s a good look for slate to be treating her like she’s evil because they don’t think she’s okay with her polyamorous situation. They might be right but I don’t think she deserves what they are doing to her. And slate hasn’t been good since Danny Lavery left anyway.

  • Felix Salmon is so confidently wrong

Good luck finding a podcast host more annoying or prone to bad takes than Felix Salmon. Remember when he claimed the banking sector was 'fine' in 2007? Or when he predicted the death of the stock market in 2011? He even pushed a shaky $400 billion fraud story in 2021. Why do people still listen to someone who is so confidently wrong, so often?

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Money Talks: What to Love About Limitations
Q: So what originally got you interested in the thesis?
Epstein discusses two drivers: (1) expanding on the theme from Range about broad experiences, and (2) his self-reflection and desire to better organize his writing and research after struggling with overlong drafts and a lack of boundaries.
Money Talks: What to Love About Limitations
Q: So introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about what the book is about.
David Epstein explains that the book argues limitations and structured boundaries can boost creativity, efficiency, and coherence, drawing on his own zigzag career and writing process to show how outlining and focus improve outcomes.
Money Talks: The AI Job Apocalypse is Avoidable
Q: What are some concrete policy levers that could move us toward pro-worker AI?
Policy levers include reforming the tax code to reduce incentives for automation over labor, increasing competition to lower barriers for new entrants, and government-led subsidies or competitions to develop technologies that directly assist workers (e.g., pro-teacher or pro-nurse AI tools).
Money Talks: The AI Job Apocalypse is Avoidable
Q: Could you unpack that? Because stepping back, it seems like a lot of the things I'm reading now are like, yes, AI is different from human intelligence because it's in fact better than human intelligence. So can you sort of unpack that?
The guest explains that AI fundamentally excels at processing large data and spotting patterns, but humans excel at context, judgment, and social learning. The productive path is to combine strengths, using AI as a partner to augment human capabilities rather than as a standalone replacement, enabling adaptability and creativity in real-world tasks.
Money Talks: Psychopathy and Success
Q: What can organizations do to mitigate these risks when hiring or promoting people?
Be careful what job ads emphasize, prioritize demonstrated collaboration and process orientation, and avoid endorsing traits like ambition or risk-taking without context. Also, implement explicit, written rules and boundaries, provide constructive, framed feedback, and consider targeted interventions rather than assuming pure reform is possible.
