Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Servant Not Savior: The Bible and Civil Government with Levi Secord
Q: How does sphere sovereignty compare to the two kingdoms view?
Sphere sovereignty expands beyond a two-kingdom framework to include the family and acknowledges that each sphere has a distinct jurisdiction yet all are equal under God. This avoids ecclesial or civil supremacy and promotes a biblically balanced governance structure where church, state, and family cooperate without one ruling over the others.
Servant Not Savior: The Bible and Civil Government with Levi Secord
Q: What practical guidance do you offer on voting and political engagement?
Voting is a moral act where each person acts as a magistrate; leaders lie and policies matter, but perfection isn't achievable. Christians should aim to advance biblical principles, be prepared to compromise on lesser issues, and avoid supporting policies that fundamentally oppose religious liberty or human dignity.
Servant Not Savior: The Bible and Civil Government with Levi Secord
Q: How should Christians view civil disobedience according to your framework?
There are three categories: obey when the state commands what is righteous; disobey when the state commands what would cause sin; and a gray area where the authority is improper or beyond its sphere, allowing careful, principled disobedience with willingness to pay consequences.
Servant Not Savior: The Bible and Civil Government with Levi Secord
Q: What are the six fundamentals of a sanctified state, and why start with God's authority?
The six fundamentals begin with God's original comprehensive authority over all creation to establish universal dominion and the belief that creation's redemption impacts every sphere, including the state. From there, the discussion moves through typical errors like Christian nationalism and secularism, the role of the law, sphere sovereignty, human dignity in governance, and divine judgment as a check on power.
Servant Not Savior: The Bible and Civil Government with Levi Secord
Q: When did you become interested in political theology and start to notice a greater need for clarity on church-state issues?
I grew up with political interests, pursued undergrad studies, and through seminary with mentors like Steve Wellam helped form a worldview that saw politics as a domain where biblical principles must guide public life, especially after observing 2020 and the missteps in evangelical political responses. The sermon series on church-state relations in his church helped crystallize the book's direction.
