  • Brilliant and Necessary

Unforgettable lessons from this globe-spanning podcast. Though it does not get a lot of attention, it’s always focused, thoughtful, original, and historically contextualized. I first listened almost 10 years ago, and I still tune in knowing I will be happy I was introduced to something new, or to receive a report on important events in the fight for global tax justice that I wouldn’t find covered anywhere else. This podcast has a special place in my heart, thank you to all those who make it happ... more

In today’s podcast I was not surprised at all to hear an English host describe Ireland diminutively as follow: “Ireland only has 0.1% of the world’s population, but they became one of the biggest tax havens on the planet”

Can I remind the host that the UK also has less than 1% of the world’s population. This includes the occupied populations of the UK. For such a small country you’re no slouches yourselves when it comes to base erosion and profit shifting, you don’t dispute this.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Banking on Opus Dei
Q: What is motivating this, in your opinion? Is this very much about the belief that it's good for business to allow anybody to incorporate as easily as possible?
It's a mix of business deregulation and the belief that it promotes corruption and undermines US national security.
Banking on Opus Dei
Q: Is there an opportunity for the US to change course on this?
The US is facing scrutiny from the Financial Action Task Force, which could compel changes in their transparency laws.
The Chinese Phantom
Q: What does it tell you about the state of financial secrecy at the moment regarding Carl Li?
We do not have enough transparency still in this field, and there are too many secrecy restrictions enabling individuals like Carl Li to evade capture.
The Chinese Phantom
Q: How can we make sanctions work properly?
We need ultimate beneficial ownership registries in every jurisdiction and they need to be public.
al-Assad and Guernsey
Q: What action can EU countries take in the UN?
EU countries can act unilaterally without a common position in the UN negotiations regarding tax.
