Artwork for The Second Muse

A great song is most often the result not of instantaneous inspiration, but of a long obedience to the call of the song. This podcast explores artists' and producers' confrontations with the "Second Muse," the muse of effort rather than of inspiration, and takes a good hard look at how they’ve chosen to contend with her.

  • Love listening to this:)

I’m not even a songwriter, I’m just a regular writer, and I love this podcast. I love hearing my favorite songwriters talk about their craft and it is very encouraging just to hear about their different processes and experiences. It is helpful for all forms of art I think.

I only wish it came more often!

  • Can a 3rd Muse be far behind?

In every single episode of this I find myself musing on all the explaterant knowledge revealed. Drew Miller literally becomes interviews incarnate and asks questions that receive literal answers, and audibly. The art of musics are so big. It requires 2 separate muses and this podcast reveals all of them. Can there be more? Hope on that.

  • Front row seat

I feel like whenever I push play on this show I get to step into a room with the people I most respect and want to learn from...I can hardly believe I get the privilege. These guys are real, honest, good at what they do, and most importantly for a podcast, they're able to explain and explore what they do with words an aspiring songwriter like me can understand and connect with. Solid gold... I come here every week for instruction, inspiration and encouragement before starting my own creative wor... more

  • Great Insight into Song Craft

This podcast is only one episode in, so this may just be commentary on that episode. But this is rich stuff. It’s refreshing to hear how a song is crafted, how the artist wrestles with obstacles to it, finding that the struggle makes the song even better while still keeping the heart of it. I think this a great concept for a podcast. Looking forward to this series!
