  • Always great conversation!

I work in automotive advertising, so mobility is my life but I’m so fascinated by the ride sharing side of transporting people. The discussions presented by Harry and his guest really make you look at the world of transportation in a way that many don’t but many should. Great host, great guest and conversations that really matter. Keep up the great work!

Harry for president! At least the spokesperson president for the gig economy. Fun, knows his stuff, and gets incredible access to industry guests and asks the tough questions that drivers want answers to.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Driverless Digest: How the CPUC Handles AV Permits, Data, and Enforcement (Pat Tsen)
Q: How does CPUC handle incidents or potential violations, and what is the role of enforcement?
If an issue suggests a violation contemplated by a decision or resolution, staff may refer the matter to the Transportation Enforcement Branch for an independent investigation. Investigations can lead to citations or enforcement orders, while ongoing program staff monitor safety and update procedures as needed.
The Driverless Digest: How the CPUC Handles AV Permits, Data, and Enforcement (Pat Tsen)
Q: Is there a requirement that AV operators move through the four CPUC permits in a strict order?
No, there isn't a strict sequential requirement. Companies may move through testing to deployment to drivered and driverless in various orders, as demonstrated by Waymo's history, but each route requires staff review, safety considerations, and compliance with applicable criteria.
The Driverless Digest: How the CPUC Handles AV Permits, Data, and Enforcement (Pat Tsen)
Q: What are the next steps after a company obtains a permit from the DMV to operate passenger service in California?
After DMV issues a deployment or testing permit, the company must operate in that geographic area for at least 30 days and then submit a permit application to the CPUC. Staff review a standard form with categories of information and a Passenger Safety Plan, and a proposed staff resolution is presented to the five commissioners for voting, which can lead to a formal permit.
The Driverless Digest: The Humans Powering Autonomous Vehicle Operations (Omar Zoubi, TaskUs)
Q: How do you see the role of humans in the loop evolving as AV technology scales?
As technology improves, humans in the loop will shift from broad labeling and mapping to handling more complex edge cases, with less frequent but highly skilled operators needed for exceptional situations.
The Driverless Digest: The Humans Powering Autonomous Vehicle Operations (Omar Zoubi, TaskUs)
Q: What are the core services you provide for robotaxi clients?
We offer a full ecosystem approach including remote assistance for level 4/5 edge cases, ground truth validation to preserve ML models, and mission control with emergency response grounded in safety management systems.
