  • An invaluable guide to Ireland’s blooming music scene

When I were a lad, there were three bands in Ireland, and it felt like two of them were U2. In the last twenty years or so, the Irish music scene has blossomed, with a growing number of deeply creative acts making music in a dizzying array of styles. It’s hard to know where to look, but The Point of Everything podcast can point you in the right direction. Fronted by the genuinely personable Eoghan O’Sullivan, TPOE helps sort the signal from the noise, plucking out the most interesting performers... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

TPOE 396: Hamer Place
Q: What were the challenges in releasing the album and how did you overcome them?
He opens up about years of insecurity and the pressure to release, leaning on friends and collaborators to push him forward, and finally releasing the music through DistroKid with proceeds going to charity.
TPOE 395: Squarehead
Q: How did parenthood impact the band's recording schedule for Ossory Road?
Two members became new parents during the creation of Ossory Road, which compressed the timeline and forced them to work quickly in short bursts, but also brought a sense of purpose and urgency to finish and release the album.
TPOE 395: Squarehead
Q: What were the challenges of US tours and early year funding?
Touring the US involved upfront flight costs, partial reimbursements later, and a lot of DIY logistics; you'd often end up selling merch to cover meals but still come back with little money, which was a common reality for early bands of that era.
TPOE 395: Squarehead
Q: How did Squarehead's sound evolve from lo-fi beginnings to the heavier, fuller style on Ossory Road?
We shifted from acoustic demos to a heavier, more wall-of-sound approach as we added live instrumentation, with the second album pushing that heaviness while still keeping hooks; Ruan O'Mara's synths and the band's collective dynamics helped shape a spacey, ethereal layer without losing the core energy.
TPOE 395: Squarehead
Q: Tell me about the Dublin scene Squarehead grew out of.
The band formed among a network of friends in Dublin who were in bands like The Manas and Hands Up Who Wants to Die; it was a vibrant DIY sphere around Richter Collective and later Popical Island that fostered collaboration and touring, especially in the early 2010s.
