  • as an Archaeology/Anthropology Honours Student in Australia I very much value the quality of content & guest speakers on the Paleo Post Podcast. The information on leading edge faunal rock art research around the world is especially helpful when combined with findings from nearby archaeofaunal assemblages. Thanks for an excellent podcast

  • Interesting- but the sound is not good

Trying to listen to this excellent podcast. First two episodes, clear, good quality sound. From the third episode onwards, poor quality audio and hard to listen to.

  • Stone spheres

I believe these stone spheres are hammerstones used in ‘pecking’ another stone into shape, as in ‘peck and grind’ a stone axe. After much use, they take on this shape and with more work will become even more round.

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From Rock Art to Rituals: New Frontiers in Human Symbolism
Q: Could you guys cover in an episode on how cave voyagers were able to light their way far into cave systems?
Cave voyagers used torches made from animal fats. When one torch burned down, another would be lit to continue illuminating their path through complex cave systems.
Neanderthals, Africa, Ancient Stone Tools & The Struggle to Save Fossils at the Nairobi Museum!
Q: How much cave art is just that? Bad pornography drawn by teenage boys?
While there might be some elements of early art that could be seen as sexually charged, the interpretation must consider cultural context. The significance of the art may relate more to fertility and cultural expression rather than playful depictions by young individuals.
New Human Lineages and Ancient Burials
Q: What do burials in Jordan tell us about ancient cultures?
The complex burial of a child with significant grave goods indicates sophisticated funerary practices and possible trade connections in ancient societies.
New Human Lineages and Ancient Burials
Q: What can you tell us about the new skull found in China?
The skull may represent a new lineage closely related to modern homo sapiens, potentially linked to Homo erectus and suggests past interbreeding with other hominins.
Cave Art Shocker: Denisovans Did It? (Or Did They?)
Q: Was it men? Was it women? Was it children? Was it all of them? What do you think? And is there actually any evidence?
Yes, there is some very good evidence indicating that gender roles were more fluid, with both men and women participating in various activities, including art creation.
