  • Very Crude

Was hoping for an indepth and sophisticated conversation with Joel Tillinghast. What I got were very generic questions and no discussion or preparation. The interviewer starts with something to the effect of “I THINK he’s still beating the S&P/keeping up his track record.” You THINK??? Just Google it. It takes one minute. Extremely disappointed.

Fan of the website but awful interviewer and terrible questions. Even recording quality was awful. Needs to be fixed.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Bernie Horn on Value Investing, Free Cash Flow, and AI
Q: You weigh free cash flow over book value and reported earnings. Can you share a case where free cash flow told you something the income statement was hiding?
Adjusted earnings are pervasive, and looking at cash flow from the cash flow statement reveals real cash that shareholders receive before reinvestment or debt reduction; working capital issues and past capital spending often mask true cash generation, which helps us reject otherwise attractive-looking investments.
Value Investing Live with Bill Nygren
Q: What is the long-term growth outlook for the semiconductor industry and factors to evaluate future prospects?
The outlook is uncertain; semis have potential in the next couple of years but margins may normalize after cyclical highs. The team stays cautious, evaluating whether the industry will sustain growth or revert to a cycle, and prefers diversified, resilient business models over highly cyclical leaders.
June Members Engagement Meeting: Special Guest Scott Phillips
Q: Is NVIDIA a stock the firm would consider owning, given current valuations?
While NVIDIA is recognized as central to AI, the firm does not currently own it and remains cautious about valuations and the cyclicality of semiconductors, preferring to look for unloved opportunities with stronger margin of safety.
GuruFocus Value Insights: Dave Sather on "Battleship" Companies, Market Dynamics and the Importance of Critical Thinking
Q: What potential concerns do you have regarding AI and its impact on the investment landscape?
Sather notes AI's ability to enhance profitability by increasing efficiency, but cautions about the risks of misinformation and the need for careful scrutiny.
GuruFocus Value Insights: Dave Sather on "Battleship" Companies, Market Dynamics and the Importance of Critical Thinking
Q: Which sectors do you find appealing in the current market conditions?
Sather mentions sectors like alcohol and spirits, which tend to be more resilient, and points to companies like Brown Foreman for their strong fundamentals and management.
