  • THANK YOU (💔Minnesotan)

Thank you for saying something. For speaking up and sharing the stories when so many others are not… as an NHL season ticket holder and big hockey gal (go Wild?) I am so disappointed in the Wild for not postponing their game or at least holding a moment of silence last Saturday… I am proud of the Frost (what’s upppp PWHL) & the Wolves for their actions this last weekend.. anyways. Thank you.

  • Need more in-depth coverage

As someone who is not a self-described sports fanatic but enjoys watching sports and keeps up with the major events, I love having this podcast to turn to for quick updates. I would love to see more in-depth coverage of the major issues and for the interviews with sports stars to be longer and more in-depth. I just listened to the Napheesa Collier one and both Napheesa and interviewer Lauren are amazing, but I was just left wanting more. These don’t feel like answers that only the Gist can get o... more

Ellen and Steph get me. I find myself replying to their takes out loud as I listen and they just seem like they are having fun. And they are 🇨🇦.

  • Get jazzed up for your day!

I used to listen to 4 different sports podcasts, but was frustrated that all the news coverage and commentary was on men’s sports. At best, one story (out of dozens) per week would have been related to women’s sports. The gist covers sports of all genders!

And…I 🩷 their jingle. GIST - Please play the whole thing at the end of each episode. It gives me the right boost to start my day! (The shortened jingle misses some of the pump up!)

Keep up the great work, and continue growing sports fans fo... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#581: The FedEx Cup: Exploring PGA’s unique postseason
Q: What is the QB rating and how does it differ from the passer rating?
The quarterback rating (ESPN's QBR) is a context-rich stat on a 0-100 scale that accounts for various in-game factors and is used primarily by ESPN; the passer rating is the NFL's traditional 0-158.3 scale that emphasizes attempts, completions, yards, touchdowns, and interceptions. QBR is more nuanced and contextual, while passer rating is a more straightforward, inputs-based measure.
The GIST Plus: Paralympian Noelle Lambert’s lesson in resilience (The GIST Plus preview)
Q: What was the moment like when you realized you could still pursue sports after the accident, and how did you start moving toward that goal?
I focused on what I could control, leaned on a personal trainer, and gradually learned to use a prosthetic while rebuilding mobility, which laid the foundation to return to lacrosse and eventually pursue running and track.
The GIST Plus: Kristine Lilly understands the importance of winning (The GIST Plus preview)
Q: What do you attribute soccer's slow rise to in the U.S.?
Lilly suggests that soccer hasn't always been the number one sport and faces competition from established sports, but there is a growing fan base and better interest across the country, as shown by recent performances and volatility in audience engagement.
#560: How the French Open boycott might change tennis’ pay structure (The GIST Plus gift episode)
Q: Could you explain the revenue share dispute at the French Open and how it compares to other sports?
The players are seeking a higher share of gross revenue, pointing to examples in other sports where players benefit from larger revenue splits; they highlighted that tennis operates with independent partners and that major slams aren't bundled like a single league, which makes collective bargaining harder, but public pressure can still drive changes.
#561: Crystal Dunn is present, pivoting, and powerful (The GIST Plus gift episode)
Q: How has representation in women's soccer evolved from your era to now, and what does that mean for young players?
She expresses pride and emotion seeing more Black women in starting roles, stressing the importance of authentic self-identity (hairstyles, nails, culture) and the impact on young players watching from around the world.
