  • Amazing and comprehensive women’s sports podcast

I’m sad it took me so long to find this podcast! This is exactly the women’s sports podcast I was looking for. Sarah Spain covers all women’s sports leagues and events with deep knowledge and context. I’ve been so impressed with the ways she doesn’t shy away from directly addressing racism, sexism, and homophobia while also going deep into the skills, fundamentals, and business of all the sports being covered. Such a great source of comprehensive and nuanced information about the wide world of w... more

  • Disappointed

After being an occasional listener of this show for a while, I’m incredibly shocked at the more recent episode regarding the WNBA draft and, in particular, the discussion around two basketball stars. I was hoping for more journalistic commentary or a basketball discussion, but it gave off very gossipy. I don’t understand the inclusion of that. This may be wrong, but as a woman in sports commentary, I’d expect better from her than to regurgitate rumors like this. It takes away from the love of sp... more

  • Shameful

It’s disappointing that you use your platform in such a harmful way. It’s upsetting that instead of congratulating an amazing draftee on the biggest night of her life, you decide to start spewing fanfiction about her and her private relationship with her partner. These women are professionals and above all else, I know they are focused on basketball and basketball alone what they do privately is their business and you should be ashamed of yourself for saying what you did about those women. They ... more

  • Trash

You missed a great opportunity to celebrate Azzi Fudd’s special night and her achievement as the number one draft pick. Instead of focusing on that, you chose to dive into drama and rumors about a breakup, which felt unnecessary and took away from the positive moment.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Don’t Use Trolls As A Cop-Out with Zoe Tzanis
Q: Why is it important to separate entertainment from journalism in sports coverage, and how can outlets do this better?
As ESPN is both an entertainment and a for-profit entity, there is pressure to engage viewers; however, outlets should be transparent about their editorial boundaries, verify information, and avoid treating sensational social media moments as definitive reporting.
Don’t Use Trolls As A Cop-Out with Zoe Tzanis
Q: Can you expand on what co-authoring meaning entails in sports media coverage?
Co-authoring means audiences and trolls become part of the meaning construction alongside analysts, with outlets sometimes deferring to these voices rather than owning the framing themselves; this shifts who is seen as the author of the narrative.
Not Now Sweetie, Mommy’s Working The Buzzer with Mina Kimes
Q: Do you have nerves about entering the academic realm and needing to prove you're nerdy enough to host the Scripps?
Mina acknowledges nerves but emphasizes that her background across Jeopardy!, spelling, geography, and live TV preparations position her well, and she views it as a return to a long-latent strength rather than a new challenge.
Not Now Sweetie, Mommy’s Working The Buzzer with Mina Kimes
Q: Why do you think it will look different this year based on Embassy Row taking over?
She explains the goal of giving the Bee a big-game feel, with a stronger emphasis on the contestants' journeys and the educational aspects of word construction, not just the competition itself.
Not Now Sweetie, Mommy’s Working The Buzzer with Mina Kimes
Q: So tell me how the new gig came about?
Mina describes meeting the producers at Embassy Row through the Jeopardy! process, how they learned about her background, and how the opportunity to co-host with Paul Leffler arose, with a focus on bringing information about the spelling bee's process to viewers.
