  • Smart and interesting

I only found this podcast this last week. I binged on 2 seasons while driving. In each episode, you meet a family history enthusiast, dig deep into an ancestor, and hear about a brick wall they are trying to get past. Based in the UK, a lot of the research has a UK angle, but do t let that stop you even if you have no research there.

  • I've really enjoyed listening to Andrew and his guests. So fascinating to hear about different people's family history.

I love the time machine at the end, nice bit of unique comedy there!

    Highly recommend this podcast!

  • Excellent

Best family history podcast I have heard, proof if it were needed that the ancestors of us ‘ordinary’ people are no less in interesting than those of the nobility.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S11EP06 - 'The Incarcerated' with Tamiko Nimura
Q: What inspired you to turn this deeply personal story into a book?
She describes how she wanted to do something different with her father's manuscript, using creative nonfiction and new structures to engage readers and to honor multiple generations rather than presenting a single viewpoint.
S11EP06 - 'The Incarcerated' with Tamiko Nimura
Q: What first got you interested in researching history?
Tamiko explains that her interest grew out of her family's deep involvement in Japanese American history and her personal grief when she lost a job, which led her to a manuscript from her father and a broader exploration of the community's losses.
S11EP05 - 'The Debtor' with Andrew Redfern
Q: What can AI do for us in genealogy, and what cautions should we have?
AI can handle tedious tasks like transcription and data reformatting, freeing researchers to focus on analysis and verification, but it can hallucinate or misstate details unless researchers continually verify against original sources.
S11EP05 - 'The Debtor' with Andrew Redfern
Q: What was it that got you interested in researching family history?
The guest explains that his mother started the journey in the 1980s to verify a possible lineage to a famous Redfern and that his own interest grew from there into Australian history and genealogical work, especially after COVID drove a deeper dive.
S09EP07 - 'The Incorrigible' with Karen Cummings
Q: How did you end up researching your family history?
Karen explains her childhood curiosity sparked by family stories, later deepened by personal losses and a scientific mindset that drew her to online records and a long journey into East Anglia and Cambridge-area families.
